A 2nd hand ryzen 5 3rd gen not sure if I would go with a 3400 or 3600

Then getting an A520 board is unnecessary. Just go for B450. They're usually around the same price as an A520. Also, get the 3600, not the 3400. The 2 extra cores are pretty useful sometimes.

PCIe gen 4 is never a requirement unless you specifically need fast storage. You most likely won't notice any difference between gen 3 and gen 4.

I personally wouldn't go for an A520 board. You'll save a max of around $30-$40 by not going for B550, and the features lost are worth more than that imo.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

Forgot to mention I'm on a smaller budget than most and that 30 40 bucks that it saves is also able to go to the gpu

Also keep in mind that the 3400G is using 2nd-gen CPU cores, so it's not only less cores but also less IPC.
