Hey everyone,

Yesterday I was watching a video from Tek Syndicate (link below) and he was reviewing the Cooler Master V850 PSU and it got me thinking why would anyone want a PSU that's not in that very high efficiency range?

I understand there are money constraints and possibly size and power output issues but besides that what am I missing? Why doesn't everyone have one of these things?

Thanks.

80+ Gold is very good. That's almost the best rating that there is, only being topped by 80+ Platinum and the draft 80+ Titanium.

As long as you have 80+ Bronze, you're good.

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Or normal 80Plus. They've almost dropped of our radars, since we're so used to seeing Gold and Platinum units, with cheaper ones being Silver and Bronze.

I think the main reason people buy inefficient cheapo awful exploding power supplies is because they don't buy power supplies. They buy pre-builts. My brother got a Hyena 500W hunk of junk with his pre-built. He didn't know any better and arguably still doesn't, despite me even offering to pay half for a decent one. A lot of people don't know better, and don't think PSUs are worth paying a lot for. They're just supplying power to the actually important components, aren't they?

It all comes down to price. And lack of awareness for getting a better psu, which is arguably the most important part of your pc.

I think more efficient psu usually comes with better internal components, hence better overal quality and power delivery. But sometimes even that can be quite misleading with a no brand or el-cheapo psu that claims to have Gold rated. The best way is to always stick with a tried and tested brand.

Imagine knowing nothing about computers and being thoroughly intimidated. After much hesitation, you saw, say, a Carey Holzman video on how to build a system. What do you honestly know about power supplies? Probably nothing. People don't know any better, and that's why they pick inefficient, explosive power supplies that are prone to failure. What does 80+ Gold really mean to most people outside of this forum? Nothing. Money, on the other hand, is a universal language.

As far as I know the Cooler Master Vanguard series psu are extremely close to platnium.

Wow. This thing didn't just pass Gold, it cleared the required 1% error margin for Platinum. Yes, folks, this unit is a platypus. That said, it is barely inside the Platinum bracket for me, so it could be that Coolermaster decided to just market it as a Gold unit and let the fact some do Platinum be the gravy on the cheesecake. Or... some other food related analogy that makes more sense. You know, I love it when companies do that - under promise and over deliver. Tells me that said company is modestly trying to do all it can to make you, Joe Consumer, a happy guy. Or gal. Or alien.

And imo as long as it is bronze and from good brand you are good to go, getting higher efficiency is choosing between paying for for the unit or more for electricity.

Me personally I probably won't buy better than an 80+ bronze for years from now. Simply because bronze is good enough and I don't have the money/don't really care enough for a better one since I know my PSU won't break.

Also worth noting is that not everyone needs to buy an 80+ Gold or Platinum PSU. Bronze works just fine. There aren't very many Silvers on the market. The higher the efficiency, the more it can be stressed. The thing is, these days, people take PSUs either too seriously or not seriously enough.
