Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

I'm a little confused by the question.

Windows RDP is your option if you don't want to install any extra software.

If you are open to installing software (which would be necessary on both the client & remote host) I'm aware of TeamViewer, AnyDesk, PARSEC, Google Chrome has one, & VNC Viewer.

Each has advantages and disadvantages. Which you go with depends on your specific application.

The problem is I don't have the admin access to the server and only have RDP login details.

Thanks.

Do you own the server, its pretty easy to reset the password.

If you don't own the server talk to the owner, this isn't a rdp issue, but a permissions issue.

If you want to use something other than RDP then you're going to have to get the password from whoever owns the server. If you own the server resetting the admin password isn't difficult.

I bought without admin access because it's cheaper and enough for my needs. (So no new software installation.) . Mentioned Google's remote desktop software looks an option for me since the server already has Chrome installed.

But you have rdp access, and tht works fine without rdp access.

How cheap is this remote system? I hve seen systems with admin access for like $10 a month.

Do you own this physical server or are you renting it? (VPS?)

Windows RDC is not smooth and sometimes fail to connect, also use much more data compared to something like Anydesk. Thtswhy I'm looking another software. This one is $8. Yh. Usually $10 servers comes with 20,30GB Disk space. But this one is 100GB. (that's a must for me. 🙂 )

RDP should have good performance, and works well with limited bandwidth, its really not that bad of a protocol, its probalby the network thats the issue.

Id really try to spend a few bucks more for a seperate vms.

Or can you use powershell remoting or ssh? do you need a gui?

Your options are very limited here then I'm afraid if you're not willing to spend money.

You can try Chromes remote desktop but my experience with it says it's not going to be any smoother. Beyond that unless you're good with CLI you're out of options if you can't install anything else 3rd party.
