My PC is running Win 10 Pro 64 bit 20H2- my Motherboard is Asus P8H77-V LE- my CPU is Intel i5-3570@3.4. I want to upgrade my CPU to i7 but don't want to change my motherboard (don't want to have to install a new OS). Would appreciate suggestions as to what CPU's to look at that are compatible with my MOBO. Thank you.

You can noramlly swap your board and keep the os install. Or at least use the same key.

Id really get a newer motherboard + ram, the i7 for that platform is pretty old and not too much faster. Whats your budget.

The 3770k is the fastest chip for your board.

3770k is fastest, but really you should forget that and save up for a new platform. 3rd gen is near being obsolete

Big nerd.

3770K still rips if you can OC it. If you cant.. well.. its not terrible. I have a 3770K and its not bad.. its not like a modern machine, but its definitely not a P4 like its being made out to be..

Could you please suggest several Intel boards? I didn't know I could keep my OS- is there a particular procedure?

Do you have a budget in mind?

Id probably get something like a i5 10400 or 11400 and a b560 board here and ddr4 ram.

Normally you can use the same os, and just move it to the new system and set it as the bootable device, and windows will do most of the driver replacement work for you.

I was in the same boat with two 1155 systems.  I went 3770K with one, got that up to 4.5GHz, and at 1080p 60Hz, matched with a 1080 Ti I am more than fine.

A second option is to look for is an 1155 Xeon.  They used to be quite cheap by comparison ($40ish) for 4 cores/8 threads.  You can't overclock them, but you get the extra threads (hyperthreading) out of them for far less money.  The current used computer parts market has probably bumped them up in price, though.  Still, it would be far cheaper than upgrading your entire system.  Assuming that you are upgrading for games, it really depends on what you play and what framerate you are shooting for, as these older processors will certainly limit more powerful graphics cards.  But, if you are only shooting for 60FPS like me, then who cares?

Check out the Xeon e3-1240 V2 (or e3-1245/70/75/80 V2).  Only the models with a 5 have integrated graphics, and each step up is basically just another 100MHz on all cores.

Edit: I just noticed that your motherboard isn't a Z-series motherboard, which means that you can't overclock the CPU on it.  So forget the 3770K as it would be a waste of money.  Your best option would be one of the Xeons I mentioned or upgrading it all.

Thanks again. Based on my research the Xeon primarily benefits business & gamer environments- I don't fit either of those categories. I'm 83 years old & primarily a casual, retired from PC business person, still doing mucho PC work at home. I think I prefer an i7 something with a compatible MOBO.

the xeon in that case is exactly the same as the i7, so there isn't the buiness vs game differences. Slightly different features, but won't matter here

Thanks much. I'd like to stay under $300. Why an i5 and not an i7?

Id go i5 as it fits in that budget better, and is normally the better value.
