1660 Super for $325, is it worth it in the current market?

TechTheWorld

Hi guys,

I currently have an old GTX 970 and it runs most games I want it to okay, but when I want to play newer games like Warzone or Red Dead Redemption I have to turn down to low or medium settings to get decent FPS. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while, but then 2020 happened. I am unsure about the future of the GPU market, but I have a feeling prices are steadily going to rise.

I found an ROG Strix 1660 Super for $325 ($5 under MSRP) on Craigslist near me and I was hoping someone could give me any insight on if that is worth it or not?

According to benchmarks the Super is about %40 better than the 970, so it would definitely be an improvement, but do you think it is worth it in the current market? Should I keep holding out?

Any comments or insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

If you're on an FX6300, a CPU upgrade makes more sense right now. They're readily available and will greatly improve your experience, even with just a 970.

depending on your location I have seen these come back into stock multiple times in the last 3 weeks, so if you pay attention you should just be able to buy one from a retail outlet. It isn't a card you should be rewarding someone for scalping at this point, when it's in stock it sticks around for several hours to a couple days around me personally

My mistake, I have upgraded my CPU to a 6700k a few years ago and forgot to update my signature

I see - well that's still pretty limiting being a quad core.

What kind of games do you play?

Oh its still limiting? I had not considered a CPU upgrade, what would you suggest? I have not done any CPU research lately.

I like playing a lot of online multiplayer shooters like PUBG, Warzone, Destiny 2, Planet Side 2 and Tarkov. I play some other games like Ark Survival, borderlands 3, etc.

The  games I would like to most improve FPS on would be the competitive shoots like Call of Duty and Tarkov.

Should be Ok, the price is steep, even for msrp, but as long as in works fine that may be a good deal considering the situation right now. See if they would take a little less anyway.

Some of the newer games run smoother on 6 or more cores, but a 6700k can still game.

The guy wanted an $80 deposit before I even saw the card, so I will not to be doing that lol. Thanks for your input though. Ill look at upgrading my CPU first. Not sure if I want to stick with intel and my current mobo or go ahead and switch to AMD. Ill do some googling

I would keep the GTX 970 and wait for a 1660 super at normal price new, to drop somewhere, or a better card.  At least you have a video card.  Some unlucky people are worse off than you.

Wow, hell no, lol, smells like a scam.

Your GTX 970 can still do well in many games, so dealing with that for a while longer is not too bad.
