GPU Crashes, Fans 100%, Perfect in Safe Mode

Hi guys, I'll keep it short. Windows 10 keeps crashing on the loading screen. This started happening yesterday, but got progressively worse as time went on. Runtime after the first crash was around 2 hours before it crashed again. Now it can't get past the boot screen.

It looks like a Windows problem, but since it got worse over time, is it actually a hardware issue?

notes: The pc runs just fine in recovery mode (the menu with the Restore, Repair options). Automatic repair didn't work. I dont have much spare hardware to test with. I have acces to the cmd.

All I need is to somehow get a Hyper-V VM exported and I will be happy.

So just a bump on this thread, I moved the graphics card to the second slot on my motherboard. I also reinstalled the GPU drivers. The PC ran perfectly for a day then it crashed again.

The symptom is actually a black screen, with the GPU fans running at 100% but the computer is still running cause I can hear my friends in Discord. So the PC isn't actually crashing. Driver, PSU or GPU im thinking? 🤔

Ok my son and seems like 100 people having this issue lately, the fix I saw people talking about was to restore to previous date prior to new windows update then block windows from updating. Hope that's the issue

I'll try to rollback the Windows update.

PC runs perfectly fine in Safe Mode.

Im 80% sure it crashes when the driver is installed.

Was able to pull thhese from the event log last night:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Component: PCI Express Root Port
Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)

Primary Bus:Device:Function: 0x0:0x3:0x0
Secondary Bus:Device:Function: 0x0:0x0:0x0
Primary Device Name:PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3C08&SUBSYS_49538086&REV_07
Secondary Device Name:

Then this:

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I have uninstalled the most recent Windows update, but have still yet to reinstall the GPU driver.

PC still runs ok without the GPU driver.

Nope, no luck.

  • Rolled back all previous Windows updated in the past month
  • Rolled back Nvidia drivers.
  • Switched PCIe slot
  • Used different PSU cables (different rail I think)

Still crashes when playing a game or when booting into Windows.

Also crashes when trying to install a driver

I can even Remote Desktop into the PC when the screen goes black.

It still amazes me that the PC runs perfect with no GPU drivers installed.

Any ideas anyone? Is my €700 GTX1660 dead?

got a spare drive you could drop a fresh Win10 install on and test?

That'd help rule out Windows Updates vs Hardware.

No, I have nothing spare with m 😞

I thought if it was a GPU/PSU issue I would have continued to see issues, even with no drivers installed . . . . that's what confuses me

Something else to note. the first time this happened I had made changes that day with FPS caps using nvidia profile inspector, which I thought corrupted the driver, but I have wiped the pc of drivers with DDU.

Im using the PC right now, but with no drivers installed, so Im running roughly @30hz
