Budget (including currency): $1400 USD

Country:  USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Android Open Source Project Build server

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Must be small. I would like it to fit on a shelf on this cart.

Working from home, I am trying to keep my professional equipment in as small an area as possible. I have this cart for most of the miscellaneous hardware I need, but I would like to add a build server as well.

I have based my budget on the Phantom Canyon NUC but I'd wager I can do better cost per core with something custom. What I have now is a Intel Core i7-4770k based machine with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

RAM and storage wise, 64GB of RAM would be nice but I do not need extra in either area. I'd be willing to reuse the Samsung MZ-76Q1T0B/AM drive.

Quietness is valued but not required. I plan to run this machine headless so video card is optional. AOSP builds are CPU bound and highly multi-threaded. My cost per core(specifically threads) and total surface area are the most important. I'd like to use something like a Ryzen 9 3950X, but I have no idea what the smallest machine capable of holding this chip is. Each dimension is around 12in or 31cm.

“Fit on this cart” is a hard one because it’s hard to tell if the “dimensions”are assembled or if that is the size of the package it comes in.  The shortest dimension is pretty dang small though.  A normal pc case doesn’t have a prayer of fitting. A panda board might fit.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

According to the link the baskets are 400mm x 300mm. Presuming these are exterior measurements and allowing 10mm on each side suggests a 380mm x 280mm interior. The Core 500 case is 250mm x 367mm. With the WiFi antenna and other cables it will be a tight fit, but should be doable.

I'd suggest the 5900X if it can be found in stock somewhere.

I didn't include a gpu. One would be required for initial setup.
