Problems with HP Deskjet 4645

Doesn't recognize the black ink cartridge and tells me it's an "incompatible cartridge" I've wiped the connector pads with alcohol, I've tried different cartridges, all original HP cartridges. So I thought it might be an old firmware problem or something but it refuses to update or use any wifi features, telling me that "the the printer could not connect to the server" When I connect it via USB to my PC and view it on HP Smart it tells me that the "Printer status is unknown" Am I better off just buying a new printer as they cost around 2 sets of cartridges where I live.

 

TL;DR: Printer refuses to use black ink cartridge, also refuses to update firmware via wifi and usb
