My friend got an APU CPU (Ryzen 3400G PRO), and I heard that getting an APU CPU is not a smartest idea if you plan to put a dedicated GPU in it.

Is it true?

It's not the 'smartest idea' in the sense that you can usually - for the same price - get a CPU without a GPU in it, which is stronger than said APU.

So if the 3400G PRO cost the same as - for example - a 3600? Yeah, the 3600 would've been a better choice.

Their money, their choice.

The advantage of having an APU are there too. If the GPU breaks, you still have something left to use, while otherwise your PC is essentially useless without an APU/GPU.

on the other hand, an APU is still a solid CPU plus a GPU.  So even if you add a GPU, you still have a good foundation in place to utilize said GPU.

Most people get APU's to either use as is or as a stop gap measure until they can get a dedicated GPU.  Adding a GPU makes the integrated graphics obsolete basically but it's never a big part of the cost.  You're not paying a lot more for an APU over a similar CPU usually.

Since your friend doesn't have a dedicated GPU yet (I assume), then the APU is a great idea to use until all this crap with GPU's settles down.

I've built multiple PCs as both APU and done, or APU and waiting for a GPU later.  Both are very viable ways to go about it.

gt 730 is much worse than the gpu in the cpu (APU)

1050 is better than the gpu in the cpu
