What makes the difference?

Go to solution Solved by Craftyawesome,

It's a design difference with the memory. According to techpowerup, the 3090 has 936.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth, while the 6900 XT only has 512 GB/s. However, the AMD cards also have 128 MB of infinity cache, which is way faster than either card's main vram. This works for most games, which tend to access a small portion of memory really often. However, ethereum mining wants ~4.1 GB of fast memory, and it accesses all of it about the same amount. This means the infinity cache barely helps.

Since everyone is talking about bitcoin mining and GPUs. i did a little research looked up the estimated incomes of some graphics cards. while i was comparing the RTX 3090 and RX 6900 XT, the hourly earning for RTX is 10.72 USD and  the hourly rate for 6900xt is only 5.57USD. ( numbers took from NiceHash calcs). Since the performance levels of these 2 cards are relatively close, why is there a huge mining earning gap between the cards? I'm genuinely curious. Please don't come at me I'm not a miner and i have zero intentions to mine coins lol. 🙂

probably the more memory on the 3090 and the gddr6x memory

I don't know much about mining, that's my best guess

Don’t take everything I say seriously

take it with a grain of s a l t

First off they are not mining BTC with a GPU, that ship sailed years ago. they are mining and alt-coin, usually ETH with a GPU.

The speed in which they mine is based mainly on the VRAM speeds. So a card that runs it's memory at 1900mhz will mine faster than a card that runs it's memory at 1500mhz. I don't know the speed of the VRAM on either of those cards but that is where the difference comes from.
