How bottlenecked will an RTX 3090 with i7 8700K be?

Wondering how long I can hold out updating my CPU, assuming I can ever get my hands on a 3090!

In 1080p there will be a very minor bottleneck, although a decent OC would help. In 1440 and 4K there shouldn’t really be a bottleneck. The 8700k still holds up extremely well in 2021

although a 3090 is pretty crap value, not sure if it’s really worth it over the 3080

What games do you play, and at what resolution? Probably very little to no bottleneck. The 8700K is still a very solid CPU.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

why on earth get a 3090?  If you have concerns about updating a CPU, you can barely afford the 3090.   3080 max.

this is for a 3080 so just add 5-10% to the numbers for a 3090

assuming you are playing at 1440p and the 8700k oc'd  between a 3900x and 9900k, best guess is 10% and around 5% at 4k. It won't be as bad as the 3600.

The differences are mostly only in AAA or competitive titles.

honestly if there are any bottlenecks that's alot of money given the price diff between a 3080 and 3090, best if you can get a 5800x since it's in stock atm, or just make sure the 8700k is oc'd in a 4x8gb config to minimize the losses.

Not bad, but I’m telling you right now that getting a 5900x + 3080 would be more worth it than just a 3090

3080 doesnt have enough VRAM to be a good long term investment for 3D rendering, also not worth considering with almost certain 380TI incoming. And yes I can barely afford the 3090 hence not waning to upgrade my CPU and in turn MOBO at the same time.

Nice, Im running ultra wide 1440 so should be good for a while then, and this is half for Rendering as well as gaming so the extra VRAM on the 3090 is a better long term investment i thik..

Disagree about the VRAM part. Games today barley use more than 8GB at 1440p so trust me, you do NOT need a 3090. A 5900x + 3080 is a better investment. You are losing 10% of performance compared to the 3090, but with the 5900x you are getting double the cores and threads, and in some AAA games the extra CPU horsepower with give you better performance with an 5900x + 3080 compared to the 8700K + 3090

It depends on a few factors, what sort of games, resolution, expected frame rate ETC.

So if you are playing current Triple A games like Cyberpunk, that game will use all your CPUs power it has and might be a small bottleneck. Older games should be fine just few of the bleeding edge modern games.

Resolution, if you are playing 4k aiming for 60hz it should be fine, 1440p 144hz should be ok but pushing to the edge, 1440p 240hz you might see a bottle neck depending on the game and same with 1080p high refresh.

Overall it should be ok for now but you might want to look at a upgrade to a 8 or 12 core chip in a year or two. Personally i’d get a 12 core because it would just last longer and the price difference isn’t that much

Yea I agree but the VRAM isn't for games it's for 3D renders and the 3080 even today is a bit on the low side and in 3-4 years will be a limiting factor.

I always usually buy top tier cards I'm running a 980TI I got when they released and it's only now starting to slow me down.
