Need Advice - Salvage old server or look for another machine

Umars

I want to set up a server primarily for storage but capable of running VMs if I need them. The VMs won't need to be powerful and I need 4tb of storage but able to upgrade.

I have an old server - Gigabyte GA-7VCSV-RH that needs a new PSU.

Is it worth buying a new PSU and using it or would I be better off looking for another machine? I don't want to spend so much money on this.

That's a nice board, but for power consumption reasons it would make more sense to buy a new system. LGA 771 is definitely getting up there in age, and it would likely limit you when it comes to running VMs.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Better buy a new machine, power consumption and performance will be much better.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

It's not only power consumption - no guarantee when it will stop working after you sink even more money to get it operational.....
