OMV Issues

Hi guys,

having not logged into my home server for a few days or even needing to access any shares, last night I sat down to watch a movie but after navigating to the share on my Windows PC, explorer allowed me to get one folder deep and then promptly hung. A server reboot didn't solve the problem.

I then tried to access all of my web consoles (OMV Admin / OMV Cockpit / Portainer / Pi-Hole......) and none of them responded.

These services (or at least Pi-Hole) were clearly working as it should since I still had full internet connectivity. I don't have a secondary DNS address specified on my clients by default so when the server falls over I loose the internet.

I could ssh into the system without issue but a soon as I tried to run any command more complex than ls (or something similar) it appeared to crash. Finally I tried running omv-firstaid but all I was presented with was half a screen showing the 1st couple of repair options and the rest black. ctlr+c didn't respond. apt-update / upgrade would also appear to stop after a few seconds and again ctlr+c didn't appear to do anything.

Opening another terminal window showed the system was still up and running but as soon as I tried another command that session crashed.

This morning I can confirm that running these commands locally work without issue but now after a full OMV reinstall I am still unable to access the web console.

I can confirm the server is connected to my network as it is showing on my router's 'connected devices' list with the IP address I specified however, when I log into the server it tells me that I should log into the web console with a different IP address (this address is valid on my network as I have a small pool reserved for DHCP clients usable by visitors) but clearly assigned by DHCP rather than the static one I specified.

*UPDATE* just this very minute I have tried sshing into the server with the static IP I specified and now its moaning about 'WARNING: REMOTE HOST HAS CHANGED' and letting me know its possible that someone is doing something nasty but also possible the host key might have changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm a Linux noob so go easy.

This is normal. Your SSH key has changed since your previous OMV install on the same IP-address. SSH is designed to not accept that without warning the user as the server might've been compromised. You can safely ignore this.

Cheers, thought as much. I don't have the option to ignore so should I just delete the known hosts file on my windows pcs or add the suggested key to the file to sort?

Oops my bad, I thought this was on RPI. I personally dont like OMV due to how resource heavy and troublesome it gets. I also had network related issues after installing OMV and fixing it was a total pain in the butt and required patching netplan.io manually.

yeah, you can delete known host to get rid of that error.

lol, no worries. Kinda thought that's what you were getting at.

I don't like being beaten with these things so I'm gonna persevere a bit more with OMV before trying something else.

What type of drive did you install OMV on? I had experienced very similar behaviour at a time when the server was having issues reading the boot disk/USB.

This is normal. You reinstalled the OS so the host-key changed but your SSH client doesn't know that so it warns you that something's fishy about the server.

On Linux it should tell you in that warning the exact command to run to remove the server from the list of known hosts. This will make the error go away when you re-add it.
