I need some Microphone Ideas

MesZa

I'm thinking of doing voice over work and voice acting work, but I don't want to go all in at the moment and get a lot of really expensive equipment, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for cheap microphones that would do well for this kind of work.

Requirements:

- Not handheld (comes with a boom arm)

- The microphone picks up all sound (i.e. it picks up when I'm yelling, etc)

- Has a pop filter

- Preferably USB

If you're trying to move into voice acting my recommendation would be to not buy something you know you will need to replace. My recommendation for a bang for buck vocal recording setup would be the 3U Audio CM1 and UMC202HD

1. Microphones don't come with arms

2. All mics will pick up if you shout they will just clip but you can use a compressor to fix that

3. Not many mics come with pop filters and no usb mics come with one apart from 1 that i know of

4. I wouldn't recommend usb because you can get more for less and have a better upgrade path.

If you want a usb mic that comes with a pop filter get the shure mv7. It's usb, comes with a pop filter, sounds amazing because it's based of the sm7b and it can be xlr too so you can upgrade later. If you want something cheaper get a elgato wave or audio technica at2020 usb and buy a pop filter accessory.

Don't buy a blue yeti

I dont know how cheap is cheap in your mind so ill just throw a few in the mix work up in price

USB

  1. Razer Siren Mini - Imagine the day recommending a razer product but the mini is actually a decent USB mic for the price. At 50 American Freedombucks its really good there isnt much that can compete at such a low price point. It come with a little stand about three inches high and has standard mic screws if you want to get a extra stand.
  2. Shure MV5 - Around 80 to 100 mark its a decent little USB mic. Again comes with its own little stand. It sounds very good if you get nice and close to it but its also happy sitting on the desk in the corner. Its my go to recommendation for this forum.
  3. Audio Technica AT2020USB+ - Moving up another fifty or so to the 140 price point. Based of the AT2020 a very popular mic for youtubers and podcasters to do voice overs with. Has a little fold out stand.
  4. Rode NT USB - Similar price to the AT2020. Doesnt come with a stand.
  5. Rode Podcaster - Breaking into the 200 price point is the rode podcaster. Good sounding very popular for £200 cant complain, well except no stand and you probably also want to pick up the special vibrations mount.
  6. Shure MV7 - One of the newer models on the block. Like the idea of the sm7b but dislike the idea of buying extra equipment. Hello SHURE MV7. High end usb microphone. Doesnt come with a stand but your spending £230 on a mic get your own you cheap bastard.
  7. Sennheiser MK4 Digital - Saving the best for last its here for your wallet and your wife. The Sennheiser MK4 Digital. Based of the MK4 but now with USB its a very high end USB microphone and at £300 it bloody better be. No stand Sennheiser aint got time to design that crap. Some of the best sound your going to get down a USB.

  • No mic comes with a boom arm. Simple as. Get them from 20 quid all the way up to 100. Some of these mics have packages with boom arms.
  • Mic picks up all sound even when yelling. Yeah obviously there microphones its what they do
  • Has a pop filter. Actually nearly every mic has basic foam shielding built in. But depending on how P and Sss you want to go you can get more for a tenner.
  • Preferably usb. Well I only recommended USB. A handfull of these mics are based off none USB version and sound basically the same as the none USB version. Like the Podcaster the USB version is only £20 more Id like to see you get a interface and XLR cable for £20. Theres more variety in the None USB world, mildly more complex if you dont know much about audio. Theres upgradability but if you buying once then upgradability isnt a matter.
