How can I check if it is? There's a thick yellow cable coming from the wall that connects to it and there's a yellow cable that connects to the modem so it might be connected to the modem.

Yea that seems like its conected. Try unplugging it and see if the connection gets worse.

Went from 5ghz, 866 mb/s to 2.5ghz, 144mb/s so pretty big difference.
