If you can hear the distortion it must exist and it happens because you need to remove some information from the audio signal to reduce file size or dynamic range depending on the type of compression we're talking about

Lossy compression will always create some form of artifacting because of the nature of removing data: how it's heard depends on how it's compressed.

ADPCM-esque audio compression methods remove data more literally by, more or less, lowering how many samples are captured period. Unfiltered, any ADPCM codec sounds rough (if you want a good example, try out any original Xbox game with IMA ADPCM, Xbox-formatted or not), but when filtered, you're not likely to really notice its lossy nature.

Psychoacoustic compression methods like, well, most other audio codecs used nowadays (i.e. MP3, AAC or Opus) aim to remove data by removing frequencies based on how the human hearing will, or rather, won't hear it. 

 

Both methods ultimately benefit from having more bitrate wiggle room to play with (or better compression methods), so as long as you give that a thought, you should be fine.
