Hi,

this is a follow up from this: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1301517-new-pc-wont-boot/

For those, who do not want to read everything in the last post, here is a summary:

The problem was that when I tried to short the pins it would start up for a split second (fans would start spining and LED would light up ) and then it would shutdown. If I used a button in the case, the system would start rapidly turning on and off.

System specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Motherboard: Asrock b450m - pro4
  • RAM: Patriot Viper 3200mhz PVR416G320C6K 2x8GB
  • PSU: Corsair CV550 550W
  • GPU: Asus GTX 1660 super
  • I'm using and old HDD disk and it works on the old system. So I assume it is okey.

Troubleshoot that I did:

  • Used the new PSU on an old system and it would work.
  • Used an old PSU on new system and it would not work, even though it worked on an old system.
  • Tried turning on the new system with the new GPU, with the old GPU ( works on old system)  and without one at all. Still nothing worked.
  • I cannot check if the CPU works, but it's pins are not bent/broken, I cannot spot any visual damage on it.
  • Mounting pressure I okey as the screws would not go deeper.

So, it's been 2 weeks now and today I got a replaced motherboard back from the shop. They said that it was something with it but did not specify what was the problem. So, I put the system together and here I am. It has the same problem. When I try to turn on ( fans would start spining and LED would light up) and the it would instantly shutdown. Although this time it would NOT turn on and off rapidly even if I used the button on the case.

Is it okey to assume that it has to be CPU or RAM??

Are you sure you are shorting the right pins? on my second pc build I accidentally shorted the wrong pins and it would still turn on for a split second. 2nd Are the cables in correctly.  3rd if you have a debug led what does it say?

If its the same MOBO the b450 chipsets may need a bios Update before working with 3000 series cpu's.

Other than that it could be a number of other issues

I double checked it in the manual. Top-right corner last 2 pins. It does not have a debug LED. Yes, the cables ar in correctly

Would it then atleast turn and stay on, rather then instantly shutdown?

Mine would shut off after 2-5 seconds but then I realized I was shorting the wrong pins after reading the motherboard manual since I'm unfamiliar with intel and then it worked once I shorted the right pins.

Hard to tell, it won't post if it doesn't support the cpu.image.png.a1bfb56c57e0f887eca823e174fac85f.png

Those are the right pins (Refresh your page as I updated one of my posts with an asrock fourm thread on this)

any 3000 series cpu wont work in b450 unless the b450 board ethier has a bios that supports the cpu. The board in the thread is the same one and as far as I can tell it won't post without an update for the 3600 or any 3000 series for that matter.

Did you update it correctly?

Is there a way to know the bios version without booting?

In the link that you provided previously, there was said that if there is an indication on the box ( AMD Ryzen 3000 series ready) then the board is already updated

yes, and do you have your box or was this a boxless mobo?
