What is best router

Khan Thompson

First, what do you understand for "router"?

It is a modem/router combo? modem/router/ap combo? router/ap combo? Or just a router, without extra features?

If is it the later one, I'd say the Juniper PTX5000 would be great, but only if it fits in your budget (http://www.juniper.net/us/en/local/pdf/datasheets/1000364-en.pdf) :P

But in all seriousness, if it is just for average your home network, something like the Asus RT-AC68U (Router/AP combo - http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC68U/) will do more then fine.

If you really need more, look into the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite (Router - http://www.ubnt.com/edgemax#edge-router-lite) and some Ubiquiti UniFi AP LR's (AP - http://www.ubnt.com/unifi#aplr). But that is only if you really have a busy network.

Was going to troll with the exact same thing, but on the Cisco side.

If I were to rework our network, and had a single WAN, I'd go with an Edgerouter PoE with the Unifi APs myself. I've recently tested the AP Pro and loved it. Unfortunately (not really), I have three WANs with different purposes, so I use PfSense to configure the routing there.
