G,day guys

So one of the cups broke off my headset... AGAIN, maybe its the way i take them off my head, but whatever the case im kinda tired of getting cheapo ones from jb-hi-fi (our equivalent of bestbuy) and im looking for something more sturdy.

I rather liked the HD8's that linus reviewed here:

1:12 demonstrates flexibility and metal inserts linking the cups to the headband. But also (as stated at the end of the clip) they are rather pricey and my wallet isnt that deep. I'm looking for something with the following:
  • a good all rounder for games as well as listening to music
  • durable and comfortable to wear
  • sound decent without an amp using just onboard audio (my motherboard is an ROG V Gene)

I also dont mind having the microphone and headphones separate, and i also dont mind their weight (as long as they're comfortable), any advice?

Cheers

Beyerdynamic makes really strong headphones.

Sennheiser's headphones are also well constructed but have a lot of plastic, you can't help but feel that you need to be careful with them.

which you should, considering how much you're paying for them.

Not that I have experience with the Sennheiser DJ HD8s, but even Linus himself has said that he's not really much of an audiophile.

You have a lot of good options for gaming. To name a few...

  • Philips Fidelio X1
  • Sennheiser HD 598
  • Audio Technica ATH-AD900x
  • Sony MDR-MA900

I especially recommend the Philips Fidelio X1s. Some of the best headphones for gaming and music.

Stick to open cans (the ones that are perforated/have grills on the cups). They usually have better soundstaging and audio quality (bass notwithstanding), so they're great for gaming. Closed headphones are better for isolating noise.

Beyerdynamic DT 770,880 and 990s are very well built well made headphones which are made in germany. The Sennheiser hd 518,558 and 598s are made of mainly plastic but they are still very robust and well made. The Sennheiser HD8 DJs are very well made but may not be in your price range...

ASUS ROG G75VX

Thanks so much everyone for the advice, still looking over all of it  :) but i've taken quite a liking to the following:

Audio Technica ATH-AD900x

Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO

The Philips Fidelio X1 are very nice as well but are a little pricey.

Could I just ask- what do you mean by "maybe its the way i take them off my head", do you like.. tear them off by one hand? could you please explain? but for build quality, I cast a vote for DT770 or DT880 or DT990, Custom One Pro is also nice.

I take my headphones off by violently beating my head into my desk. It's harder to do with my Shures because of their deep pads.

I think Beyerdynamics and V-Modas are the best built out there. Out of those, Beyerdynamic DT990 are probably the best for gaming but all of them are good choices. The V-Modas are more bass heavy while the Beyers are a V-curve

Sometimes rather then putting my hands on the cups pulling outward slightly and taking them off, i put my hand on the band at the top and pull them backwards so the band is resting on my neck  and the cups are under my chin. Regardless the cups on the pair in question are held on by rather flimsy plastic bits, roughly the same diameter as a screw you would use to mount a motherboard to a standoff in a case. I had the problem with the same pair in the past so i've been pretty cautious with these ones but still they broke, hence my interest in some nice sturdy ones.

Well typically you won't want to do that but partially it's that headsets are just not that durable.
