Posted February 10, 2021 My little sister has an Asus UX330 laptop from 2017, with a Core i5 7300u processor. It cost $800 when we bought it and it isn't anything special, but she likes it. She's by no means a power user and it does everything she wants, including some light gaming. Recently, the keyboard conked, and Asus customer support wants to grossly overcharge us. So, we decided to fix it ourselves (done this before, pretty confident). A new keyboard will cost $135 - a bit of an extortionary price for a 4-year-old laptop but it's from an official seller. The battery's doing okay but she would ideally like to have it at its original capacity again, so that's another $40 or so. So we're talking $175 in parts, but getting a comparable new laptop will cost at least 4 times as much, and she said she won't benefit much from extra performance because she doesn't do anything intensive. It also means that we can wait another few processor generations before replacing it, and will potentially get more for our money. Posted February 10, 2021 Repair it. If there's no desire for a performance increase by going with a new generation then it seems like a no-brainer for less than $200 in parts and some time.
