Hey,

just wanted so say officially "hello" to your community, and quickly talk about something that is close to my heart.

You can have a shrine and be an Apple fanboy at the same time. My shrine is only for gaming, though. It's fun to build a rig, and if i have problems with Windows i just wipe the machine.

It would be the same as having a car to get to work every day (Apple) and having a muscle car in the garage you work on at weekends (Gaming Rig). It actually is a great combination IMHO.

I still would NEVER try to do serious work on a windows machine. Sorry. I trust my rig, but i just hate Windows, and i know i can't be the only one. At the same time, Gaming under Mac OS still sucks. Games are just not that optimized in OpenGL, and there are a lot of lazy ports. So having both sides separately is a benefit. Everything UNIX- and Linux- based is very welcome to replace Windows for me - can't wait for Steam OS, let's hope the graphics drivers will be decent.

I like what Linus does, and i respect his views and neutral stance on a lot of technical issues, for example in what way he talks about Apple. He can really walk the thin line to fanboyism in both directions (for example, iOS and Android). This is something maybe a handful people in the tech community do (like AnandTech), because fanbases get offended easily.

I noticed that Slick is not at all this way. He doesn't like Apple and does not hide it. It would be nice if he would have a little bit more objectivity in this regard - personal taste is important, but if you are about to review stuff it should not cloud your judgement.

I still think Apple Laptops are technologically superior to any other brand. No one is really arguing about that. Gaming under Windows on an Retina MacBook Pro actually is a great, cool, quiet experience. Expensive yes, very expensive in this case, but you get what you pay for. You are not whining about the prices of a Porsche or a Ferrari, because you know what you get, and you know the experience will be better if you are willing to spend the money. One should not try to bend this logic only because we are talking about Computers.

So, there.

Hai guise :)

I don't hate Apple, I actually like them. And please do NOT use black text when you are making a thread anymore. It makes it hard for us dark theme users to read.

What do you hate about windows? Like what feature make you mad or frustrated?

I know Mac has a lot of apps that are for audio production etc etc

To me, the only difference between a Mac and windows PC is the OS.

Some of the minor things just make you frustrating. Sudden crash of MS word. 32/64 bit compatible BS. Can't connect to wifi while phone does. Need 64bit patch in order to make Visual studio link to databse, BSOD out of no where, no "forget network button", apps almost crashed while changing font, etc. Even a simple forget network button, and they fucked it up in Windows 8.1 , the latest of their OS.

Hello man, welcome to this community, you will never leave.

Well, it is JUST opinion that you like Apple and dislike Windows (Microsoft actually, Apple is a company, not a Operating System) and as we know, everyone has their opinions, so there is someone to stand by yours, because in world of 7 billion people, there really isn't a chance everyone's opinion is different, but someone else's may be different, some people may share the passion for hating apple, it goes the same for Windows. I prefer Windows more, because I'm a kid who likes to game, nothing more, nothing less, but if i had a job, I would take the Apple device because of it's clean and sleek looks and because, it just feels more proffesional, doesn't it? But again, i can stick with Windows, because there are more customizabillity (If you don't count hackintosh) options. Every device has its Pros and Cons, and everyone has their opinions, remember that.

Hey Hoppa,

there are a lot of things, but you are right, the OS is maybe the most important difference.

Because Mac OS is BSD / Unix-based, there are just so many security / stability / networking advantages that it is not even funny anymore. IMHO.

Hardware-Wise: Apple may be overpriced, especially with RAM-upgrades etc., but look at the Laptops and the new Mac Pro. They are really technological marvels (battery life? Built quality?), and in case of the Mac Pro, not overpriced at all for what you get. Linus will have a DIY Mac Pro Guide out soon, that sure will be interesting since i would like his viewpoint on that.

He sometime mentioned in a WAN Show that he cannot believe the fan noise and temps at the new Mac Pro will be as low as advertised, and when he got the chance to actually see a Mac Pro in action, he gave Apple props for the engineering in a later show. That is one thing i like about him.

I hope no one minds if I chime in a little bit by listing some of the things that annoy me on Windows:

  • can’t customize anything important out of the box (modifier keys, application hotkeys, button placement in applications)
  • the window management is a total mess & no virtual desktops
  • no column view in Explorer
  • lack of consistancy (menu placement, hotkeys etc.)
  • UI design isn’t that great
  • no thumbnail support for some formats in Explorer (PSD, CR2)

This is interesting. Can you elaborate what you mean with "BS Marketing Schemes"?

I work in advertising for a looong time, and i personally think they have the most tasteful and beautiful marketing in the tech world, always centered around the product and it's use.

The last two years it is going down VERY fast, though. This was Steve Jobs' signature.

EDIT: Also, they really don't spend much on advertising - far less than, say, Samsung. So, all the hype out there - it's coming from THE USERS.

I really dislike Apple and Apple products. I do not consider myself an apple hater though.

Ive never like IOS, its just so boring and locked down and the lack of customization bothers me. The IOS devices are overly expensive for the hardware you get and the phones are far too small for my liking.

As for Apple computers, i do not think they are technologically superior in anyway. They use the same CPUs, RAM, SSD/HDD and GPUs as everyone else. Apple do not actually manufacture any of the guts of the device. The only difference is arguably build quality, but many other manufacturers produce high quality machines these days. For me it comes down the the OS. OS X is terrible in my opinion, I dont mean in terms of what you can actually do within the OS, for me both would suffice, but in terms of layout and user experience. This may be partly because ive never taken any significant amount of time to learn the OS but again why should I? Windows does everything i need already and is absolutely stable (also more games are compatible with windows but the games i play on a regular basis are actually available on both platforms).

Then there is the customizability of the hardware. Apple deliberately takes steps to limit how you can expand and upgrade your machine, just look at the new Mac Pro. This for me, a technology enthusiast, who likes to tinker and tweak is completely unacceptable.

Beyond this, i really dislike they way Apple attempts to restrict competition by suing everyone. This limits innovation and prevents us, the consumers, for being able to purchase newer, more exciting products.

*Random crashed of thumbnail. Happened since Windwos xp

*Some start out programs simply won't start

*Hard to change language, sometime it change, sometimes it doesn;t, it's like they are self-aware

*Some programs will actually corrupted itself if you didn't touch it for a long time, not sure if it happen in OS X, but this sure annoys me.

I think Samsung is more BS when it comes to marketing, their latest Galaxy pro ad, trashed on iPad and Surface. The trashes on Surface being inconvenient to advertise how "convinient" Galaxy pro is, is not even true.

Nexus - this is really on the heart of any critique about Apple. I think it comes down to how you think about technology in general, and the underlying philosophy that goes with it.

If technology is an utility for you, you don't care about the customization options. It's like the car you drive to work every day: Many people dont care about "customization" at all. Which "normal" Person even upgrades their computer - at all?

If technology is an hobby for you, and/ or you are very knowledgeable - like most members in this forum are, you think completely different about technology - including Apple. In this case, you want your "car" to be customizable - think muscle car, paintjobs, interior, rims etc. This is fun for you.

I think one should appreciate both sides for what they are. IMHO the great majority of people view technology today as utility and DON'T CARE about customization, they care about utility - and here Apple just builds superior products. (Security, design, stability, build quality).

This is why most people drive regular cars where you cannot even change the oil yourself anymore - and still don't care. Because their mindset / viewpoint is different - not inferior, but different.

Regardless as to whether you are a tech enthusiast or a "normal" user you cannot argue that Apple machines are better in terms of the underlying technology. As stated they use the same CPUs, GPUs etc. Now if you do not care about customization then yes an Apple machine may look a little more appealing. The problem here is that Apple machines are expensive and offer these average consumers no real additional benefit over a windows machine. Both allow you to browse the web, watch videos, listen to music and create spreadsheet and documents. So for most people it does not make monetary sense. Plenty of normal people upgrade their computer, or more specifically pay some else to do it for them. My local computer shop gets hundreds of customers wanting
to buy new ram or hdd etc.

You mention Apple products are superior in terms of design, security, stability and build quality. In this you are wrong/being very biased. Just look at Asus ultrabooks. They have amazing build quality and industrial design. The HTC One or the Sony Z1 have amazing build quality. Apple are not alone in producing nice looking well build products.
Security?, you made me LOL. There have been plenty of security problems with IOS and OS X.
Stability. Ive not had any of my windows machines crash for some time. i cant recall the last problem ive had. Many people are in the same situation as me. Also Macs do crash. Its not unheard of.

I really don't see any real argument as to why Apple products are superior. Maybe if the software you wish to use is only available for OS X or IOS then yes, but its almost guaranteed that a windows alternative will be available.

Nexus, sorry, but you don't get my point.

Replace "Mac" and "PC" with two different car brands, one cheap and one premium, and maybe you understand it better.

If you really think this you don't know what Apple products are all about.

Except that it isn't premium vs. Cheap.

Its a matter of design and whether you know what you are doing or not.

I recommended a MacBook for my cousin because she knows nothing about technology and she has an iphone and an ipad. I didn't recommend it because the MacBook Pro was a superior product.

You are right, it is too simplistic. I don't want it to sound "elitist" or something. I just didn't know how to describe it differently.

Built a decent, quiet gaming rig / Steam Box equivalent: i5-4670k OC • MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming • 8 GB Corsair 1600 MHz • EVGA GTX 780 OC w / ATX • Fractal Design Define R4, Windowless • Samsung EVO 250 GB SSD • Be Quiet! Dark Tower Pro 10 650w (worth every penny) • Noctua NH-D14 • Corsair K70 (MX Brown) ... but i am an Apple fanboy at heart. Since 1984. 128k, Plus, II, SE, SE/30, LCIII, Performa 630, Quadra 700, PowerBook Duo 230, PowerMac 6100 / 9500, PowerMac G4, PowerBook G4 17", MacBook Pro 17" • All Newtons & iPhones • maxed rMBP 15" which i use for real work.

I completely agree with you. I use Mac OS on my Hackintosh image for my everyday tasks, and only use Windows when I feel like playing some games. Windows is awful if you want to get any work done. Especially for any software development because it isn't UNIX based and there is not true terminal as a result.

If your computer is lagging when changing fonts, then I'm sorry but that must have been a poor computer (spec wise). It must of had some problems with it as well (since it was getting those BSOD).

On my PC, I've had 1 BSOD, and that was when I was when I was having an experiment with overclocking. As for using it like a user would, I've never had one.

Don't forget, Macs can get the BSOD as well.

The latest OS doesn't always mean the greatest. eg when vista came out. And I'm pretty sure you can forget a network on Win8+ I've done it before (I don't think it's labeled 'forget network')

Nexus, sorry, but you don't get my point.

Replace "Mac" and "PC" with two different car brands, one cheap and one premium, and maybe you understand it better.

"The problem here is that Apple machines are expensive and offer these average consumers no real additional benefit over a windows machine."

If you really think this you don't know what Apple products are all about.

Do you really think everyone who buys and cherishes Apple Products is just "misinformed"?

“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” Daniel J. Boorstin

"Replace "Mac" and "PC" with two different car brands, one cheap and one premium,"

Thats not really a fair analogy. A Fiat Punto is a significantly cheaper vehicle than an Aston Martin DBS or a BMW 4 series. All of these vehicles are designed for the same purpose. To take a person or persons from point a to point b. But in this case the Fiat Punto is of lower quality than the other 2 vehicles. The engine is weaker, the seats are less comfortable, in speaker system is not as good. With the Mac vs any other computer argument this is not the case. They use the same underlying technology - apple does not manufacture their own CPUs or GPUs. The only difference is the OS. Windows is compatible with a wider range of hardware and software. There is a wider range of Windows PCs on the market so you can find one in your budget or that offers the features you want.

"If you really think this you don't know what Apple products are all about."

Please enlighten me. What are apple products all about?

"Do you really think everyone who buys and cherishes Apple Products is just "misinformed"?"

No not everyone. But a lot (probably most of them) are. This is also true for Windows PC buyers. Most people dont know the differences between OS X or windows, most people don't know the difference between a core i3 and a core i7. Most people don't know what specifications they require to perform the computational tasks they do. Quite frankly most consumers are misinformed. This is why marketing is an important factor for these companies.

Just look at the evidence. The majority of users on this forum or others like it prefer windows over osx. The majority of users on this forum are tech enthusiasts and either enjoy it as a hobby or as a profession. We are the informed and knowledgeable elite.
