PC UPGRADE (gpu or cpu upgrade?)

Go to solution Solved by gal-m,

So the Intel Core i5-4670K Processor is a Haswell CPU which started production around mid 2013. They used to be decent CPU's for gaming, but they are getting old nowadays. 12GB of DDR3 (hopefully configured in dual channel) memory is quite nice to have and should last for the time being.

The problem is your CPU is pretty much 8 years old at this point and at the end of its life.

If you only have money for a GPU I'd recommend something like a used AMD RX 580 (4, or preferably the 8GB version), but nothing higher, since your CPU is most likely going to start bottlenecking your GPU at 1080p - what does this mean? Without getting technical it means that generally there could be a chance that your GPU will be spitting out too much information/too many FPS (in gaming for example), for your CPU to handle. So it will try it's best to keep up, but it will say: whoa, hold on there buddy I can't work that fast, to your GPU, thus limiting its capability.

Basically, if you want to buy a higher end GPU I'd recommend buying a new CPU, motherboard and RAM as well.

Why used? Currently GPU prices have risen all over the world, as mentioned by @SupaKomputa with the majority of sought after GPU's costing pretty much DOUBLE of what they should or used to.

This is the price for a new RX580, which used to cost around 160EUR NEW, but is now going for over 200 - 300EUR, which is NOT worth it.

I'd recommend you try to find a used RX580 @Robin K for anywhere from 100EUR - 180EUR OR wait for things to stabilize.

Budget (including currency): 400 Bucks, max of 500

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1080p/1440p gaming in the furture, with as many fps I can get. 140+ would be the best amount, not a necessity though)

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am wanting to upgrade from an old i5 4670K and a 760(yes, 760). 12 Gigs ddr3 Ram, 500W PSU.

Question: Should I get a Cpu Ram and mb upgrade(ryzen 5 3600?) NOW , OR wait till I can get a 3070/60 ti?

Thanks for taking the time and helpin out a young lad!

Sincerely, Robin

If you can have it now why wait? 3600 dropping price close to msrp, get it now.

If this is meant as choosing between the CPU or GPU, then my vote goes to the GPU upgrade as it's going to make the biggest difference.

If you're planning to do both then I don't really understand your question, but agree with @SupaKomputa.

Gpu or Cpu

Then buy a GPU. It's going to make a MUCH bigger difference than upgrading the CPU.

Well 3600 is around $200, a month a go no stock so the price skyrocket to $350.

My point is go buy the CPU first, as you really can't buy a GPU right now, the price is very high, not worth it.

While I partially agree with this please keep in mind that the AMD 3600 isn't going to magically improve your gaming experience.. It will make things a bit smoother but you are currently still limited by your GTX 760 GPU. So this is NOT the solution to the question you asked, which is essentially: how do I upgrade my existing setup with a 500EUR budget @Robin K.

I guess what we're trying to say here @Robin K is that you might need to start looking into building a new PC IF you want 140+ FPS at 1080/1440p.

Keep in mind, the GTX 1660S/Ti or the RX 580 won't get you 140+ FPS in all games. I'm assuming we're talking about a variety of games here @Robin K? Or just lighter titles?

Yeah like there is a big variety involved here. But in most fps shooters (R6,, bf5 and such) 140+ fps ARE nice to have, but in more cinematic games(RdR2, Gta V in a way, horror and other games too) 60fps are good enought.

If you're talking about higher settings I don't think you can expect getting 140+ FPS in Battlefield 5 @1080p or 1440p..

You need a better GPU for that, at which point you need to upgrade your entire PC 😞.. and with a 500EUR budget that's pretty much impossible at the moment (in my opinion).
