5800X Instantly hits TJMax at load

Under the advice of LTT I upgraded my CPU to a Ryzen 5800X (full specifications below).

Idle, my CPU is 40-50°C.

However, whenever I run 'stress --cpu 16' my CPU goes up to 90°C () within 5 seconds and then stays there (as reported by XSensors).

I have a Corsair h80i v2 AIO (tier 2 cooler). Originally, I used the wrong AMD motherboard stand-offs and replaced these with the correct AM4 motherboard stand-offs. The cooler is installed in the rear of the case with the tubes at the bottom. I bought some Arctic silver 5 to replace the pre-applied thermal paste.

 

Could I have cleaned the CPU poorly when I changed the standoffs? It looked clean.

Could the screws on the CPU block be too loose? I didn't want to over-tighten them.

 

Motherboard wise, I'm using the MSI mortar Wi-Fi, running BIOS version '7C94v15' (the latest available BIOS).

I haven't changed anything except made the fan curves more extreme and turned XMP on.

I'm using Manjaro Nibia 20.2.1 GNOME edition with kernel 5.10.7-3.

Even if it is tier 2 single fan AIOs are pretty bad.

Also that cpu runs hotter than 5900x sicne it has only 1 CXX (which is better than 2 on the 5900x) Also that cpu has the best single core performance in the world right now.

The screws holding the block on should be tightened all the way, the standoffs are sized such that it's not possible to overtighten them. 90*C under stress test doesn't sound unreasonable for that CPU paired with that cooler though. How does it fare under real-world load?

what i am saying is that your temps are expected.

The h80 is basically the performance of a hyper 212 which is barely good enough for a 5800x. So yeah not the right cooler.

Same honestly. Maybe because it's a decent cooler for certain itx cases? But then again that would make the tier list a bit odd.

So the h80i v2 has 2x fans and is a double thickness radiator, I don't think I can return it now that it's been used so I'm stuck with it.

Is it worth purchasing better case fans / a better case and undervolting the CPU?

 

I don't want to cook the CPU, I will probably be using it for the next 10 years!

I heard they changed the safe temp range for the new 50xx series, what temp range would be considered safe?
