I'm not really sure. What card is in there now?

GEFORCE 4 MX 420

it says 4x 1.5v but apparently AGP is backwards compatible so I can put in a 8x or something even better?

It's a GeForce 4 MX440.

420*

But doesn't matter I already know there are 128mb cards... I just need to know the fastest card I can put in there basically, maybe even 256mb........!?

More VRAM does not automatically mean more performance.

it kinda does because more vram means it's a higher priced card usually, like the GeForce 4TI cards .

found this!

EVGA GEFORCE 6200 512MB:

This is one of the most powerful AGP graphics cards in the list here. Here we have EVGA GeForce 6200 AGP 8X video card that comes with 512 MB DDR2

512MB DDR2 baby!

Also there's this, but the slot is different? or would it fit?? 👀

It won't fit.

And there was a 128MB version of the GeForce 4, but it was actually worse because the VRAM was slower.

More VRAM and higher cost does not always mean better-performing card - some cards sucked so not many people bought them, driving up their price today.

oh I see, weird... but yeah the actual speed is important too of course!

so why is the slot different, it's an AGP card seems strange?

AGP had multiple revisions - 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x in terms of speed, and voltage for the cards - 1.5V and 3.3V (older and hard to find in working condition).

Universal slots (I believe) are capable of supporting either type via DIP switches on the board, settings in the BIOS, or simply autodetect.

wow that's complicated...

well I think I'll try to get one of those evga or msi ones with fan and 128/256mb... the article I found also says the 420 is the most basic one, unsurprisingly since it's used in a medion pc (ultra cheap Aldi brand basically, but not a bad built quality necessarily)

Compared to ISA slots, setting jumpers on your motherboard to control your CPU voltage, and hoping that you don't have conflicting ID numbers (I have no idea how to properly do any of this), this is a piece of cake - just confirm that your card takes the right voltage and fits in your slot and it should work.

Hmm well if you know what switch is what then it might be easy... for me this all looks like ancient space shuttle tech which I have no idea of...

Btw I checked my msi card looks exactly like those, 512mb, but is "pci express" so... not a chance it would fit. 😕

ok there are tons of those on ebay - - - after the algorithm gets that you're looking for agp cards and not rtx 3090 lol.

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

this one might be a good "upgrade" from what I've been reading... something like X1950 would be complete overkill for example

Update:  well, cleaned the pc (it wasn't even dirty except the bottom lol) and at least it works! But, boy is it loud.

it's also relatively quick though ...

Now to get rid of all the shit that's installed on it, if I'm finding my windows XP CD I'll reinstall, but for now I'm not finding it hah.

I mean good idea but this looks way worse on photos, it looks pretty ok irl. Also I used ethyl alcohol to clean it, not sure if that did something to the color already lol.

PS: I think the hard drive is dying...? it keeps telling me "windows explorer stopped working" or "windows media player stopped working" basically its soft crashing all the time lol🤔

Chkdsk found no errors (and took about 1 second which was also strange haha)
