Long time HDR user here, the issue isn't whether people use hdr for gaming, it's whether the hdr looks good for the particular monitor.

In general but not always the case, hdr400 monitors look bad with hdr on, 600 is meh, 1000 is decent.

on a 27GL850 (hdr400) i left it off, On the x27 (hdr1000) i only sometimes use it, as some games are sometimes too bright, but i leave it on in general with lowered brightness.

Things that actually looked great with hdr on: 2077, metro, sekiro, godfall, most console games, netflix, ps5 games and blurays. Overall I think FALD or OLED is a required feature for hdr displays.

Things that looked off and gave me a headache, any competitive shooters (bf5/division was way too sharp even with lowered settings), shadow of war would alot of time overshoot the color gamut, and there were a couple of games that the hdr didn't look right

thanks, ill either stick with my 2 Asus ROG 1440p monitors, one 21.5inch curved and 1 standard rectangle. just wish the curved one had gsync not adaptive sync. because i intend to play cyberpunk because i have the graphics card to do it. even at 1440p it can dip down in frps and gsync would be nice. thanks for all your help.

Hey all, im currently using two non HDR 1440p monitors. both asus ROG and one is a 31.5 inch curved screen. however the curved ROG monitor uses freesync and now that i got a RTX 3080 i want the HDR AND Gsync.

brand wise, or better yet if you have any amazon links for a good 1440p with low latency and at least 144hz refresh with gsync and HDR you can link or suggest id appreciate it. currently going through the process of cleaning re tubing the custom waterloop on my z77 sabertooth that has a 3770k and a Titan X both with EK waterblocks on them to sell now that my new computer is built. hopefully i can get 5-550$ after i replace the tubing and clean it up. super pumped to be switching to a 3080, the titan x was still giving me 70-80 frps at 1440p max settings but i wantyed to finnaly upgrade.and have HDR.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions, but I'm curious. How much are you considering selling the Titan X for?

oh I don't know if it has HDR, but I doubt it does... I think you'd have more luck looking at the 4K 144hz IPS panels that came out mid to late 2020... there should be plenty of options there...

Should take a moment and read the Pinned thread. Finding good HDR on a monitor is difficult.

its not that people dont use it if they can, its that Monitors with 'real' HDR, are pritty much limited to the professional space, or a select few very expensive gaming displays that have other issues.

Very basic HDR ( HDR 400) is the most common, some can do HDR 600, but none have the DCI-P3 color gamut needed for proper HDR of any spec.

TVs however do, there bigger, able to get brighter, and are designed to hit DCI-P3 HDR color spec.

Im not saying u cant see a difference between a middle groudn HDR monitor and a basic SDR one, there is a difference, but dont expect HDR that compete against TV's.

Just to give u an idea of what we're talkign about.

rtings has 113 monitors reviewed.

Only 6 can hit 570+nits in real scenes.

1 of them is a TV panel not suited for Desktop use

3 of the others are ultrawides

And one is the LG CX OLED which is great but to big for most people.

And they all cost way over $1000

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/table/47443

There are however 29 that can do 400nits.

So u can look through them for basic HDR

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/table/47444

400nits real scenes with ~600 nit peaks will be better than ~400 real scene ~400 peak

FYI the G7 while it can be advertised as HDR 600, only 'peaks' at close to 600.

The real scene brightness is ~ 400bnits. However yes it is a good display none the less.

I think a good consensus (the 27inch hdr monitors are gone for 6 months at least) is an LG CX or C9 oled tv (though new models are coming out), they were on sale during thanksgiving and i had friends that just...bought one, none of them are complaining, as the image quality of the oled is just too good, hdr or not, but if it's too big for ur use case then 😵

Indeed, LG Display (the development and manufacture not the retail side) announced they are manufacturing a 42" OLED panel, however no announcements of a 42" display as of yet, only 48"+
