You haven't provided system specs GPU/CPU/Mobo, monitor make/model, etc. so it's hard to say

ok, and to be sure it's not the KG241Q right? I see the only difference is the Q is limited to 75Hz

Reading the Acer KG241 (if you have the "regular" KG241) user manual....

This monitor has HDMI 1.4 port, and a DisplayPort 1.2.

It doesn't matter if you have a HDMI 2.0 cable, you are hard limited by the port on the monitor.

HDMI 1.4 can't do 1920 x 1080 144 Hz.

 

In the monitor user manual, that HDMI port on the monitor it limited to 1920 x 1080 75 Hz.

1920 x 1080 144 Hz is supported only if you use the DisplayPort.
