Arduino chip question

My Arduino came with a chip labelled ATMEGA328P U, but I also have another chip laying around labelled ATMEGA328-PU. They appear to have the same pinout; however, I can find few references to the ATMEGA328-PU online. I was wondering if they are interchangeable.

Thanks!

Yeah I thought the difference is in the size and shape of the chip, one for surface mounting, one for through-hole. I can only find the -PU chip online though, no -U variant.

dealt with this when I was managing R&D for a startup awhile ago... basically, the 328P-(suffix) is a lower power version of the 328-(suffix), with the suffix indicating the chip package as others mentioned. There are also some differences IIRC with how they handle accidental resets due to low power states that can affect performance and stability when being powered by battery, but that's only likely to be a concern when integrated into custom products. There may also be bootloader differences between the chips but my memory is cloudy there. Long story, 328P-** are the standard for Arduino so I'd stick with that for maximum compatibility.
