GPU problems with Rocket League (HELP PLEASE)

I recently switched setups and am having unplayable problems with exclusively Rocket League. When I run other games such as Risk of Rain or Gunfire: Reborn, I get consistent 250+fps and my cpu/gpu runs at 80/95%. Whenever I run RL, I am getting barely 50 frames and it is always fluctuating; my cpu/gpu is now only running at 40/70%. WTF. I am running an intel i7 10710U CPU, as well as an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB GPU with 16GB onboard RAM. I have checked so many possible bottlenecks and nothing seems to have caught my eye. Please help a guy out.

For the record, my friend runs this on almost the exact same setup, but with a much weaker gpu, at 250fps no stutters.

i7-10710U.

This is a laptop?

You mentioned that you "switched setups" ... so what were you running BEFORE?

The i7-10710U has a Base Clock of ONLY 1.1 GHz, but can Turbo Boost *up to* 4.7 GHz.

Max single-core Turbo Boost is *up to* 4.7 GHz, while all-core Turbo Boost is *up to* 3.9 GHz.

If the CPU is not boosting very high (e.g. not plugged in, or not enough cooling), then you'll have experience pretty bad performance.

Note how I say *UP TO*. It can run lower.... say 1.5 GHz or 2.0 GHz.

At that those speeds, you'll take a hit in gaming performance.

Is the game running with a frame limit on! Check settings, default is limited to 60 in RL I think. Is the frame cap removed in config text file? These are the things I can think of off the top of my head.

I guess it may have been helpful to mention that I am running an eGPU setup with a Razer Core X which then feeds into a 1080p 144hz monitor. What confuses me is how poor my rocket league performance is compared to other titles, yet my system isn't running as hard.

I was previously on my family's desktop, but I've had to figure something else out for my college dorm. The cpu I can't recall, but its four or so years old at this point-- i7. I know the gpu was a GTX 1060 6GB.

Yea I have it set to 144fps to match my monitor's framerate, but good call.

Would recommend removing cap in config files and/or cranking frame rate cap to max in  settings if your monitor is gsync or freesync. Otherwise I have nothing else to say except that I hope your problem gets solved soon!

I would say monitor the performance / frequency of your CPU during gaming.

The i7 you have is a 'U' Processor, so it is an Ultra Low Power variant.

It might boost to high frequency, but for short periods only.

A desktop CPU, even if old might still perform better than your current i7-10710U, because it doesn't have a 15W (or 25W) power limitation.

For example, if it was something like an i7-7700K, it can run a ~4.5 GHz 24/7.

While your i7-10710U might be running at 4.7 GHz, that might be only for ~30 seconds at a time.

Then it's back to 1.1 GHz for ~30 minutes, before doing another 4.7Ghz burst.

These laptops with 'U' Processors are targeted a light-weight, and long battery life, over max performance.

Compared to other games, if Rocket League cannot make use of the those 4+ cores, AND it favors high CPU frequency, then there is the difference.

Also, if your other games only uses ~2 cores, THOSE two cores could be running at a higher Turbo Boost.

If Rocket League uses say...4 cores, the Turbo Boost frequency would be lower (and probably for shorter period too).

Intel's Turbo Boost varies by the number of active cores.

I am not able to find what what boost behaviour is for the i7-10710U, but if I had to make guess from their track history...

  • Up to 4.7 GHz with 1 ~ 2 Cores active
  • Up to 4.5 GHz with 3 ~ 4 Cores active
  • Up to 4.2 GHz with 5 Cores active
  • Up to 3.9 GHz with all 6 Cores active

..... or something like that ....

My Lenovo T480 uses a i5-8250U, and if the battery is fully charged, I can get ~13 hours of battery life from it.

It's what I carry around when at work, or on the move.

The CPU runs at 1.6 GHz, but can boost up to 3.40 GHz.

Since the laptop is set to run on low power mode 80% of the time, it runs at 1.2 GHz ~ 2.0 GHz usually.
