It's always good to have a HDD in your system so you can store large simple data like music, photo's and videos. (unless you have a NAS)

For stuff like photo's and videos you don't need a SSD.

So I would go for the 256GB SSD and the 1(maybe 2?)TB HDD.

That way you can store the large data on the HDD and install you OS and games on the SSD.

when you run out of SSD space they you can always buy a second 256GB SSD and dedicate it to steam or something.

But of course, if you have a nas or server then just go with the 512GB straight away :)

@looney summed it up nicely.

Someday I hope to get a NAS, and replace my HDD with an SSD for games and stuff. (It's quite easy to fill a 250gb ssd with games)

Stuff:  i7 7700k @ (dat nibba succ) | ASRock Z170M OC Formula | G.Skill TridentZ 3600 c16 | EKWB 1080 @ 2100 mhz  |  Acer X34 Predator | R4 | EVGA 1000 P2 | 1080mm Radiator Custom Loop | HD800 + Audio-GD NFB-11 | 850 Evo 1TB | 840 Pro 256GB | 3TB WD Blue | 2TB Barracuda

yea, i want a SSD but i got over 500GB worth of games installed, sure i dont need them all on my SSD but at the same time, it shows how easy it is to fill up :(

As do I, yet I'm currently using a 120gb SSD.. I'm rationing but I have no problems whatsoever because I only really play 4 games.

I might eventually upgrade when I see prices drop more or a sale goes on (I really want 500gb/1TB ssd)

IMHO, 500GB SSD. You can worry less about differentiating drives via moving files, downloads etc. You have it all on one drive. When I had my old rig, I hated having two separate drives.

I'll honestly never get a HDD again.

Hands are perfect cupholders.

I only have a 128GB for steam but then again I can download a 50GB steam game in one hour or less so I dont mind deleting them.

You could go with the popular SSD and HDD combo; OS and programs on SSD, games on HDD.

in that case no one needs more than a 16gb SSD... you want more to make textures and such load in quicker

You can put your most used games on the SSD, and the lesser ones on the HDD.

It depends on your performance requirements and budget constraints.
