nvme SSD not showing in disc management, but is visible inside my old SSD drive as a disc, but is nowhere to be found

JernJoergensen

Hey guys. I am trying to install a new NVME SSD from Samsung (970 EVO NVME M.2), but it wont show inside the disc management. The only way i can se my new SSD NMVE M.2 is if i right click on the old ssd drive and choose properties inside my disc management, and choose drivers. Then it will show side by side with my old SSD, but i dont know how i activate it, so it is my second drive, where i can download games and do homework.  I have tried installing the samsung nvme m.2 drivers.

PLEASE HELP

In Device Manager, if you haven't already, try the 'Rescan Disk' and 'Refresh' option.

See if the 970 EVO SSD will come up.

If you still don't see it, then your next step is to double check, and make sure it is showing up in the laptop's BIOS.

You might need to enable / disable something to get the NVMe slot activated or something.

By the way, are you able to give us the brand and model of your laptop?

We might be able to dig up an user / technical manual or something, that MIGHT show us how to get the NVMe slot working.

Okay, that's even better

(Could've said something in your post about it being a desktop PC with a MSi A320 Grenade .... THIS is why we ask people to list their system specs)

Make sure the NVMe SSD is properly installed in the slot...

What version motherboard BIOS are you using?

There was a BIOS from 2018 that mentions "Improve M.2 Compatibility" -- BIOS version 7A39vAB.

If your BIOS is quite old, it might not have the proper microcode to support / detect the 970 EVO.

According to MSi's webpage, latest (non-BETA) BIOS is version 7A39vAG, dated 2019-01-28.

Beta BIOS is available, version 7A39vAIQ, dated 2020-07-09

In the BIOS it says that it that the last BIOS is from 2019, and has code E7A39AMS.AIP,but that code doesnt show when i enter the latest BIOS updates on the website with all the BIOS updates.

I dont get it.

And when we download the latest BIOS to a Flash Drive, does it need to be completely empty?

Cause the flash drive that we use, is empty inside the one of the 2 different flashes on the flash drive, and that is where we located the BIOS. does both have to be empty?

The picture you uploaded is really small...I have to scale it to 200%, only to see a couple of pixelated letters and numbers.

I can make out the at least the BIOS version year, and it is indeed showing 2019.

If it complete shows up in BIOS, then the problem is software related on the OS / Windows side, and not a hardware issue.

Might be a good idea to boot into some kind of live cd and see if it is working there. Just to be sure it is not your OS that's causing issues.

It does show in the BIOS boot menu, so the problem is OS / Windows related.

Atleast i now know that the hardware isnt the problem.

Next question: What should i do to get the OS / Windows working correctly to find my SSD inside disc manager

"Live CD" = Linux installed onto a USB stick (e.g. Ubuntu).

What you can ALSO do is grab a 8GB+ USB stick, and put a Windows 10 installer onto it.

Boot from that, as if you were going to do a fresh Windows 10 install -- but don't actually commit to it.

Go to up to the step where you CHOOSE which SSD / HDD to install Windows onto, AND see if your Samsung 970 EVO is being detected there.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Follow the steps under 'Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC'

When you get to Step #5, use the USB Flash Drive option, NOT the ISO File option.

I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM WITH THE NON DETECTED NVME SSD M.2.

But now i dont know how to make it my boot manager, as the ssd i boot the pc into is temporary as it is one of the components of my buddies pc. So i need to know how i make it the boot manager so i can remove the 2.5 SSD and make the new M.2 NVME SSD the main boot manager

I have reinstalled windows on the new NVME SSD M.2, hoping that it would be able to boot into the M.2 SSD instead of my friends old 2.5 SSD, but i didnt.
