Hello everyone,

I didn't know if this would go in the build section or here but I ultimately decided here because it would be a server. Ok, so i want to build a personal cloud that would be my media server, I'm running Emby right now, email server, and if possible, basically a Google drive/photos. The questions I have are. Do you think I would need one physical server per function or could it be done with one system? For my server to act as a Google drive/photo receptacle, does anyone know of how to direct photos taken by an Android cell phone to be backed up to a cloud storage location other than Google? I did do a quick search through the forum to see if a similar question was asked before, if I'm asking again I apologize.

, email server,

I wouldn't do this. Lots of issues hosting email from residental ips like being blocked by a isp and not trusted by others like google and microsoft.

Yeah, running your own email server, even assuming you rent a vm to avoid residential IP issue, is basically full-time job. A lot of stuff you have to do, and not only once but regularly, for it to work properly. Bad idea for personal mail, far too much work even for professional.

If you want to get away from google and other "pay with your data" type of providers search for non-free email providers, may be hosting providers who have email hosting as an option. That would be far more realistic.

You can use docker to run all kinds of services.

Personaly I run:

- plex server

- (radarr/lidarr/sonarr)seedbox

- pihole

- nextcloud

- smarthome hub

- openVPN

- webserver (php7/mariadb)

- Resillio Sync

- NAS (mergerFS/SnapRAID

All from a i5-3570K with 24GB of ram and four 8TB Seagate ironwolfs and a 500gb SSD. And I think those specs are even overkill.. I use openmediavault as OS.

Mostly it is sitting there idleing away and using power...

I had the same issue when I was on residential line, one way to get past the blocks is to get a smart relay. But now I am on a business line.

  • 1 month later...

Thanks everyone for your replays. I apologize for not responding sooner, I had an out of state mission I had to attend, I'm a radio technician for the US Army. I have an old computer that I'm going to setup and play with some of your program suggestions. I'll post periodically here with updates and questions. 🙂
