Any thoughts on the LG 27GN950-B or other 4K 144Hz options?

Stahlmann

Hey there,

i've been using a 27GN850-B for a while now and absolutely love it. But as i was lucky and actually got a 3080 in september i want to upgrade to a 4K panel now. I already have a 4K OLED TV for HDR games, but not every game is best played on a huge 55" TV for obvious reasons. So i've been thinking to replace my 1440p monitor with a 27GN950-B. As this is quite the investment (800€) i want to take in some opinions. I'm not playing any competitive games, but story based singleplayer games or slower multiplayer games. So i'm not looking for a high-refresh-rate montior to max out the 3080, but rather a high-resolution one.

Anyone here who can share his experience with this monitor so far?

Are there any better or comparable 4K high-refresh monitors out there that i'm not aware of?

Thanks in advance!

Excellent Choice. But keep in mind that you will not have 1ms response time in games.

I know it's pretty much the same as the 27gn850 in this regard. More like a 3-4ms experience. But still great overall.

@Stahlmann - firstly, good luck finding it anywhere in stock.

I managed to get one near the end of last year to pair with my 3090 and have been more than happy so far. It replaced a 165Hz 1440p TN panel that refused to work correctly with my 3090 (flickering above 60Hz refresh rate) and appreciate the superior image quality from the IPS panel. Gaming - I'm mostly into FPS games and haven't run into any issues and the G-SYNC compatibility works as intended. My eyes ain't what they used to be (too many years programming on tiny monitors) so I run the desktop at 150% scaling which I find is about the same as my 1440p monitor at 100%. To get high refresh at 4k, you need to use the Display Port with an GPU supporting Display Stream Compression (DSC) i.e. your 3080, you won't get this with HDMI as the port is HDMI 2.0. Lastly, LG has a firmware update available to increase the refresh rate of this monitor to160Hz over Display Port.

Point to note, LG announced at CES this year that they are coming out with a refresh of this monitor (no ETA) that includes a HDMI 2.1 port.

Thanks for the info! As the refresh was only announced at CES i'd guess it's still quite ways off. I don't really care about HDMI 2.1, as i only need a DP connection to my PC. Anything that needs HDMI 2.1 goes directly to my 2.1 capable TV.

Yeah, finding stock is not that easy. Most sellers here in germany say it's back in stock in March 😄
