SSD or External SSD suggestions needed!

I need a secondary SSD for my Thinkpad, the spare slot fits a 2242 and it will only run at 1x. 

I was wondering if it's better to spend the £50ish for a small capatacity SSD or get an external type C ssd/enclosure. 

I will use it as a windows boot drive like twice a year for uni projects. 

 

Any suggestions will be appropriated. Thanks in advance.
