Hi, I still can't make up my mind. Prices here in Australia are different to in USA so not all the info out there is relevant.

Which card would you recommend? I think the best choice is the EVGA 780 SC ACX but I still question if its worth the extra $100 from the stock 780 and wonder if the 290X Tri-X would be a better choice for $50 more than the EVGA. I can afford up to the 290X Tri-X.  I know that the stock 780 overclocked is faster than the stock 290X but I am not sure if that still applies in this case.

I would go for the MSI 780 or the EVGA 780 with the ACX cooler on it

Could you guys give a brief explanation as to why?  And is your choice in anyway related to Mantle or DX12?  Thanks for all the replies : )

I recommend the 780 because the MSI's cooler is supposed to really quiet and EVGA has really good warenty and good for overclocking and i think that nvidia's cards are better for the price as of now

It performs better and is at a better price. I always recommend EVGA though lol.

Edited.

I would go with a 290, not a 290X. Basically the same performance and the extra 5~ FPS doesn't justify the price imo.

Plus you could overclock it (the 290).

Yeah, and you can get REALLY near 290X performance for around $200 less in PCCG :) @oporto92

Wasn't that used as a reason not the get a 270X and GTX 680 since the 270 and GTX 670 were generally good overclockers that made the "higher-ups" somewhat "useless"? I guess they're made people who don't want to overclock, but, overclocking them to the settings of the "more powerful" GPU and saving that much money could allow someone to get other stuff like an aftermarket cooler, SSD, etc.

I have a question, If you overclock a really OC friendly 280X, like maybe a 280X Matrix, if you can find one :P Could you get near 290 performance for even less? For like 350-400?

I have no idea, but potentially it could work. I'm not the person to ask since I just have basic knowledge on stuff like this and I have heard/read that GTX 670s, R9 270s, and R9 290s are good overlockers, GPU-wise. With CPUs, I think the 750K from what people said is a good budget overclocker; I guess the FX 6300 would be considered too.

Thanks for the replies but honestly they have made my decision harder : /

To narrow it down more, I wont be upgrading too soon so I would use the card for around 2 years, 3 max.   I also want to save as much as possible so $100-$150 more for extra 2-5 fps is not worth it in my opinion but the temperate, noise, power consumption and long term use (~2 years) can justify the extra money and in that case, who can enlighten me?

To narrow it down even further I will also the card for photo and video editing.

I will be gaming at 1080p and pc specs are:

First gen Intel i7 920 2.79Ghz  (Will overclock to the highest stable, probably 3.8)

12GB Ram

PCIE 2.0 16X (Mobo) Cant remember which one but its a gigabyte.

PSU is a Gigabyte Superb 720 (specs here:  http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2793#sp )

Btw, please don't say that either card is overkill for 1080p : )

Cheers!

Would you be upgrading in the future to 1440p or even 4k?

If you're ONLY going to game on 1080p for the whole lifetime of the card, I know you said not to say that it would be overkill, that doesn't change the fact that it IS a massive overkill. I would personally not spend money on a top tier card on a 3~ year old system. I would also upgrade the mobo and CPU.

@MexicanAnimal

Bottleneck is not an issue so I won't be upgrading CPU or Mobo, besides I don't have that much money. I can still get plenty out of my pc with just a simple upgrade. Next one after this will be a whole new system.  Yes I will upgrade the monitor to a 1440p but I am not sure when, it could be in a year, but I am not gonna wait a year to upgrade.

I really want to enjoy games at maximum settings while playing smoothly but not just that, I need a fairly good card for video editing/rendering as well.

I don't get it, back in the day 30fps wasn't near enough what people would be happy playing on, the standard/average accepted fps has gone too low IMO. Yes you can play a game at 30-40 fps and enjoy it but you cant compare that to 80-100+ fps specially when you play multiplayer FPS games.
