That explains it. It seems like PBO is enabled. This overrides traditional power limits and additonally allows extra boost headroom on Zen3. This CPU will use as much as it can within thermal limits, which is why it appears to be overheating. It's running as fast as it can for the cooling you give it.

If you want cooler temps, disable PBO.

Hey, I have recently built my own pc for the first time. It's been a week now since I'm using it and I've noticed that my Ryzen 7 5800x CPU temperatures are higher than what I'm used to.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x

MOBO: ASUS Tuf GAMING x570-plus - Latest BIOS v.3001

CPU COOLER: MasterAir MA410P

CASE: PHANTEKS ECLIPSE P400S TEMPERED GLASS - 3 fans in front. 1 exhaust in the back

Maybe it's normal, I don't know but I feel like that's a bit high. For example, Having chrome open, opening outlook. When the mails start loading, the temp. rises to 65 sometimes 70°C. On idle, it varies between 45-55°C

Bios settings are default. Only thing I changed is the XMP profile for my RAM speed. I've tried to re-apply the thermal paste with a slightly more amount than last time. Same results.

Under load the temperature rises to 80-89°C with 50-60% utilisation while my GPU is at constant  65°C with 100% utilisation.

Should I be worried or is that completely normal for this CPU?

That's too hot. The cooler can't handle the chip.

90c is your throttle point.

Sooo, I need a better cooler? Thought this one is pretty good. Got any recommendations?

Do you have a preference? You have a tower cooler now. Do you prefer that style?

The 5800X's maximum turbo speed is 4.7 GHz according to https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-5800x

Why is your CPU hitting 4.85 GHz if it's a stock configuration?

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

I'm not really sure to be honest with you. I think it's because the cpu boosts itself up for performance? Maybe that feature is turned on in the bios. I really don't know

Neither NZXT or Hw monitor will be accurate. Use Cpu-z to measure clocks. Right clock the frequency box to see the speed of all cores.

If CPB wasn't enabled, you'd be stuck a 3.8 GHz.

What does HWiNFO say?

NH-D15 will be as good or better than most AIO coolers. I'd get this one.

The NH-D15s will be a good cooler for you, I would also recommend to add a Noctua NF-F12 fan to the cooler for improved performance without compromising clearance.

It won't fit in the case, the NH-D15s is the best solution for OP.

Oh damn. The cooler is too tall?

I'd leave the side panel off then, but that's just me.

The NH-D15s has similar performance if you add a NF-F12 to it,so that is better than leaving the side panel open :D

I am running a NH-D15S on 3700, and it never goes above 61c when folding. Definitely leaves some head room.

Not much of a Gamer….. But I have thing about F@H that may be a little over the top.   See my builds here

Post frequency and temperature results with CPU under load, the idle results are pretty much useless, and list what program you use to stress it

While I'm not sure what program that is, it's certainly not HWiNFO
