Photoshop takes forever to open any file if GPU Acceleration is enabled.

wyattzx

Hey guys.

I originally posted this topic on the r/Photoshop subreddit, but it got zero attention. I also tried on the Adobe Support Forum, but it got no attention there, either. I'm really hoping I can get some help with this, even if it's for a specific piece of software.

Whenever my Graphics Processor is enabled, opening a file will take me between 45 seconds and 1 minute. This could literally be a basic, 512x512 JPEG avatar for Discord, up to a multi-layer PSD file. Zooming and panning feel smooth *once it's loaded,* but the loading itself takes forever. Panels slowly populate, the entire application hangs, and it's practically unusable until it fully loads. Once I turn my Graphics Processor off, opening files is snappy. However, zooming/panning are practically unusable with how slow they become. I feel like I have to compromise on one awful scenario or another, and I'm being charged a not-insignificant amount of money per month to make said compromise. I find this unacceptable.

Here's a list, in no particular order, of what I've tried:

  • Resetting Preferences
  • Running Photoshop as Administrator
  • Changing Font Preview quantity
  • Changing Grid Subdivisions
  • Changing ALL options for Graphics Processor
  • Clean Reinstalling Photoshop
  • Clean Reinstalling Graphics Drivers
  • Updating Windows
  • Changing Recent Files Quantity
  • Moving Scratch Disks
  • Moving image files to same NVMe SSD as Photoshop

There might even be more I can't recall. None of these have fixed the issue. For posterity's sake, I'll post my PC's specs below:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite
  • GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1080 Ti Mini
  • RAM: 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200MHz
  • Windows 10 20H2 64-Bit
  • 1x 250GB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe SSD
  • 1x 2TB WD Blue 7200RPM HDD (Games)
  • 2x 1TB WD Blue 7200RPM HDD (Scratch, Media)

LTT Fourm got you.

That sounds like Photoshop just being stupid but could also be nvidia's stupid game ready drivers.

Try DDU and then installing the studio drivers because those are generally more refined or at least have less bugs and dont compromise on gaming performance.

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

That is really odd, and if I were in the same shoes as you, I'd entertain the idea of a reformat.

The issue is, this has been a problem for months. I don't think it's a Game Ready Driver issue, because their Studio drivers are just held back.

What could be the culprit to jump to such an aggressive solution? I would hate to go through the process of redoing everything only to find out the problem isn't on me.

When it's like that I disconnect all drives for the PC, take a spare small SSD, install only windows, drivers and the problematic software on that and test. If it does it there too it means there's something wrong with the hardware setup or something that a reinstall wouldn't help with.

Reformatting isn't an aggressive solution unless you're ultra bad at organization. Just back up your documents, download installers for your drivers and programs, take 30 minutes to delete the drive and clean install of windows, put your programs and drivers on, and presto!

If you have brushes or preferences in your programs, just find out where those are stored, and make backups of them (which you should have anyway).
