If you're looking for rendering then go nvidia for sure. Their CUDA / Nvenc technology is great. I personally use a 980.

I don't have anything specific to recommend but I'd either stick with 16 series or wait for 3000 series to get back in stock. And really you only need 3000 series if you need RT cores and want to run serious games at high res / framerate.

For the gpu or for the build?

Build, probably a RX570

Gpu, wait for them to exist, then get a 3080

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Bios database

My beautiful, but not that powerful, main PC:

[If USD currency]

For a full build on a budget of $1000, you could fit a 3060 Ti or a 2060 KO depending on how you spec the rest of the PC.

[if CAD currency]

Same rationale, could fit up to a 1660 Super.

For $500 on a full build you can't really do much.

Good to know, because that point was specified twice above as being "For the build" and not exclusively the GPU. 😕

In which case (still don't know what currency you're using):

[USD]

RTX 3070 - $499.99 to ~$650 (prices vary by model)

RTX 3080 - $699.99 to ~$850 (prices vary by model)

[CAD]

RTX 3060 Ti - $549.99 to ~$620 (prices vary by model)

RTX 3070     - $679.99 to ~$800 (prices vary by model)

RTX 3080     - $888.88 to ~$1200 (prices vary by model)

These are the GPU recommendations, you can't go wrong with any of them in your use case, just pick one that looks attractive for the price, and go with it.

I would not recommend any of the new AMD cards for animation and rendering, as NVIDIA is more reliable for that. Pricing on last-gen, and used cards are also no longer attractive anymore after the launches of the RTX 30 Series. Don't bother with those.

For $500 on a full build you can't really do much.

You could easily fit a 3070 into a $1000 USD pc with the right budgeting, without making any major sacrifices unless you have a niche use case. The problem is finding a gpu- any gpu, really.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.
