24GB slower than 16GB

Tried 2x 8GB and 2x4gb so total 24gb and I was getting less fps when gaming than 16gb ( 2x8gb ) any idea why ?

All the ram is same speed, same model etc

Make sure the matching sizes match the channels (so the 8GB in channel A, 4GB in channel B)

EDIT: yeah looks like that's not the issue

What are your specs? If ryzen then this is totally logical as you started running in single channel memory which has a noticeable impact on performance. Dual channel can be done with different ram stick sizes but it's iffy to get it to work and past 2 sticks it just doesn't work. So basically use 2*8gb and leave it be. If you have a 10th gen intel you'll also see an impact but less.

Ya ryzen 5 3600

Oh yeah you just went into single channel memory mode so you lost a good bit of performance and got the nice added bonus of stuttering from that too. Totally normal hence why everyone always says 2 identical sticks of memory in dual channel for amd (or any other multiple of 2)

I think you're on the right track and haven't seen anything else in this thread to make me think this is not the case.

@venomx聽Which ram is in which slots? You should go 4, 8, 4, 8, or 8, 4, 8, 4. That should remain balanced and remain in dual channel model. For the first 16GB of accessible memory, there might even be some performance increase from having partial 2 rank per channel.

Slot 1: 4GB聽

Slot 2 : 8GB

Slot 3 : 4GB

Slot 4 : 8GB

I removed the 4GB modules and my fps has increased.聽

Other videos on youtube also suggest 24GB ram is actually slower than 16GB聽

Interesting, did you check at the time it was running in dual channel mode, and at the expected speed?

I cant remember about dual channeling but in HwInfo it had 00 and 01 on 4GB and 02 and 03 at 8GB or something like that聽聽

Yeah they were all at 2400mhz, then I tried 2667mhz which worked,聽 then I tried just under 3000mhz and it blue screened, even with voltage set to 1.3ghz.
