To start, I have no idea if this is the right place to post this or not so please inform me if this is the wrong place. I am preparing to save my money to buy and build a new PC as a gift to myself, and will be giving away my old one to my girlfriend. Please point me in the right direction if this build will be solid or if I need to change things.

Processor: Intel Core i5-3750K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz LGA 77W Quad-Core (I don't know much about Intel, but I assume the i5 is sufficient enough for gaming.)

Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming (I trust MSI and I've heard nothing but good about this board. My friend has it and his runs smoothly.)

Graphics: MSI Gaming N750 TF GTX 750 (This is an upgrade itself from my current EVGA GTX 560Ti.)

RAM: HyperX XMP Blu Red Series 8GB DDR3 1600 (2 four GB sticks, upgrade from current 2 two GB sticks. Also goes with the red color theme from MSI.)

Power Supply: Coolmax ZU Series 700W SLI Ready (Only 50W less than what I have now, and I trust Coolmax 100%)

Storage: Toshiba 1TB 7200 RPM HDD (Yes, I know this is an SSD, but that'll come at a later date. 500 more gigs than my current 500GB HDD.)

Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Just got this beast of a cooler in my current build, works amazing. Keeps my CPU much cooler, about 38 degrees C while idle and I believe no more than 45 degrees while running games. Before, with my stock cooler, idle ran at about >50 degrees and always reached 65 degrees while gaming. Will also add more case fans to provide adequate air flow)

Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Yes, I'm willing to sacrifice the quiet for a bit more space, but I'm quite impressed with the Define R4 and the Arc Midi R2.)

@lucidthrowaway Follow your topic that way you can be notified when someone replies to it. Also, you might want to start off with using PCPartPicker that way all compatibility issues should be negated. Such as an Ivy Bridge CPU with a Haswell chipset and completely different socket. Also, red text below please. :)

This belongs in the New Builds and Planning section. I'm moving the thread.

The Build Logs section is for showing off your system and the process of building it.

The 3570k is lga 1155 and the z87 chipset is 1150. they are different sockets and aren't compatible.

What's the system being used for? Budget?

The 750 is not an upgrade from the 560 Ti.

Stay away from Coolmax psus and Toshiba hdd's if possible..

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

The system is for gaming and will be used for class. I would like to try to keep it around $1000 but if I go over, I should be fine.

Also, why stay away from Coolmax PSU? Mine right now seems to be working fine.

Coolmax isn't known for making good or reliable psus. There are much better options available and you don't want to entrust your hardware to a faulty psu.

You need a k series cpu to oc.

The caviar black is not worth the price premium over the barracuda which is only slightly slower.

The 750 Ti is substantially weaker than the 770.

Sorry @lucidthrowaway, just going slightly off topic to ask @WoodenMarker this:

Why is the GTX 770 mostly recommended over something like the GTX 760? Just curious.

It's one of the best graphics card you can get before you spend a large chunk of money for a 780/290 which many people just can't justify for themselves.
