Am I okay? 350W PSU

For an upcoming build I am very limited on options for Flex ATX PSU's (only standard that works with my case).

 

Realistically is a Seasonic FX350 going to be okay for my hardware?

I also will undervolt my 3800x. And I am exploring the option of trading my 3800x for a 3700x. 

 

I would get the Seasonic FX500, but it seems impossible to buy as of right now, especially here in Canada. I just want a second opinion / sanity check.

Unfortunately, that PSU only has a 6-pin PCIe connector, and that 1660 Ti requires an 8-pin (or 6+2 pin which is the same but the +2 are separate so you can use it as both).

 

In any case I'd look at 450W at the very least for that combination. The CPU is 105W TDP, might draw a bit over that amount of power at full load, and the GPU is 120W, more if you increase the power target. In theory you could do it off 350W, but it would be pushing it and the PSU might shut itself off on a power draw spike.

 

Edit: looking at the prices of aftermarket Flex ATX PSUs, why not buy a case and a decent ATX PSU? It would solve your problems completely.

Maybe? Just barely.

Youd need a 6 to 8 pin adapter to spoof the psu but I wouldn’t recommend doing that, the other 2 pins are grounds for power stability over a 6 pin.

Wattage wise you’d be cutting it very close, under max synthetic load it may have problems. Under realistic use it should be fine.

But I still wouldn’t risk it, get a higher wattage psu, or maybe look into undervolting your processor, where 10 watts may be useful to cut out.

I don't know that I would do that. 350W would be cutting it very close. Is there any specific reason you need such a small system?

Shit lol can't believe I overlooked the PCie connector. Hypothetically lets say I swapped for a 3700x, and just a GTX 1660. I know I'm still cutting it close, but should that be okay?

 

The problem is in this form factor the 400-450W units are considerably worse quality. The FX500 is the only higher wattage option I trust. I may just have to wait or overpay for one on eBay.

 

EDIT: I want to keep this form factor, I'm trying to keep the system as small as possible, I move it for work and this case is my perfect solution (plus I already own it and the other hardware).

I move it around for work. I already have the case and am committed to the build.

-If- you know what you're doing and decrease the power limit of the CPU + the GPU, and get a card that only requires a 6-pin (there might be 1660 supers/tis that only require one), then I'd say it's ok. But you're stuck with a computer that's limited in power draw so I'd say the 500W one is a pretty good investment.

Yeah, it's something I will have to think about. I basically knew that I would run a real risk running the hardware I have with the FX350. Thank you for the info. I will watch for the FX500, hopefully it will become available at a Canadian retailer, if not eBay it is.

@DailyProcrastinatoryou are totally fine. I ran 3700x and 5700XT out of a bad 400w psu for about a month and was totally fine. but you should get a gpu with 6pin pcie connector like 1660 or some lower end models 1660 supers can have only 1x 6pin.
