Hi folks. I just recently built my first gaming computer a few weeks ago. This computer has been running quite hot. I am in search of a solution or explanation to these temps. While idling, my CPU runs about 62 to 74 C, while playing games on recommended settings runs from anywhere between 84 C and higher. Specs: CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x 3.6 GHz 8-core with the stock cooler. MOBO: Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming ATX AM4. MEMORY: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16. STORAGE: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME SSD with a Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal HDD. GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB GAMING X. CASE: Corsair Carbide 175R RGB. PSU: SeaSonic S12III 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX.

thanks for all of the solutions folks.

i was already interested in purchasing an aio, so i may take that route with a higher end paste or something.

i will also inspect any fan config issues i may have

thanks again

That's honestly not super unexpected for a 3700X on the stock cooler, but you might be able to improve temps a bit by adding some airflow. What is your current case fan configuration?

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Get an AIO. It might seem expensive. It might seem like too much. get an AIO. if you have good case flow. temps will lower. ALOT.

use a -.05v cpu voltage offset, or if it's still too hot, use -.1v, should lower temps by 15-20C.

You can try and update the chipset driver and run Ryzen Balanced mode in windows and see if that helps.

77c idle?  Yes it is. 50c idle is getting warm. Any under 85°c on a gaming load, or 95°c on a torture level load isn’t surprising with an early model cpu and a stock cooler though.  Is the cooler mount any good?  If I wanted to cool the chip down and it’s on stock paste I’d tey a higher end paste. Frequently good for 5c or so.  If the thing didn’t work with the stock cooler they wouldn’t sell it that way.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I disagree. The 3700 is at most a 83w chip.  A 300w cooler seems pretty excessive, especially if it comes with the kind of disadvantages AIOs come with. If the 3700 was good at overclocking it might be a reasonable statement, but very little is gained by big OCs on the 3700 so there’s no reason to do it.

A good air cooler and solid case flow are all you need. Right I am running my 3600xt at 4400 all core and seeing 75c load in aida64 with no fan on my heatsink.

I'm running my 3700x with a 212 evo and never see much over 72c while benchmarking and idle below 40c
