Liftetime for PSU ?

Go to solution Solved by CADGuy23,

5 years is average and 10 years would be a long life.

Hey, so I've been wondering. whats an normal liftetime for an PSU?

My hardfighting and loyal overclocked and tired i7 980x (10th anniversary) has been falling behind since Ryzen came, and deserves some rest. So new system with a new 5950x system with custom whater loop is on my list now.

Running 1070Sli atm. but, goin for 3000series or 6000series as soon as its posible to get hands on them.

But, ive run into a smal issue. all PSU's over 700w is sold out in my country, and out of stock untill March/April, so Is it safe to use my Corsair hx850 from 2008 on my new setup untill i get a new one?

thanks for all tips and info.

I don't see why not, the HX850 is a very solid product. The average lifetime of a PSU is extremely variable and will definitely depend on how hard it was pushed during usage. If it has all the connectors you need for the upgrade and it's powerful enough, you should definitely keep using it until it dies.

I'm all for using parts until they die, it helps reducing unnecessary e-waste.

As a general rule of thumb, check your warranty. If it is out of warranty, replace it. However there is more to it than that. If you were to only utilize 50 percent of it and maybe more just occasionally, it would likely last longer. Personally I draw the line at 10 years for a quality PSU that has been used daily.

The corsiar PSU's are pretty solid as whole I would say the PSU will fine.

The bigger concern is really pairing a 5950x with a likely high end RTX 3000 or Radeon 6000 card may exceed the PSU's ability, you'll likely be fine but on the limit

I can't stop spending money my stupid home lab, help.

Totaly agree. but, a bit worried about running new expensive components on an OLD PSU.

On max load the PSU has been pushing 750-810w since 2010, depending on GPU setup. and maby around 4-500w 2008-2010.
and been running 24/7 since may 2008ish. with 2-5 hours gaming every day. + work.

would get new one if there was a GPU in stock. 700w+ has been out of stock since october ish...

NO, don't use that 12+ year old PSU.

Just wait it out and get a new one.
