I need some help because I'm clueless. I live in South Africa and we often have power outages and we have a unstable grid in general (also a lot of lightning storms). I'm about to build my first pc but I'm scared of what sudden blackouts and surges may do to it. Should I even be worried? Otherwise what precautions can I take to protect my pc? Thanks for your time and input if you help.

Buy a quality UPS like one from APC. They have surge protectors build in and can stabilize power in case of grid fluctuations. You also want to make sure the wall outlets in your home have proper grounding and the electrical panel is grounded as well. If you live outside a major city, it may be possible to have a generator kick in once the grid power becomes unstable. There are Generators that will do that. Most hospitals have them on the roof but you can find smaller units as well. I'd get something with a diesel engine as gas motors tend to shut down after a couple of hours to cool off.

What should I look for in a UPS. It doesn't seem like APC is available easily in my country. Can I send you some options and you let me know if they are any good ?
