CPU/MOB/RAM Upgrade

Ex6oN

Budget is around 450euros
Pc is needed mostly for gaming.I already have a GTX 1060 6GB its still enough for me as I don't play newest titles.
I was thinking about i5-10400f but dont know if its worth getting z490 and ram with faster mhz, or just a cheaper b460 board?

You'll see there are benchmarks showing it's better to go z490 +Faster ram but only you can answer the question of cost vs performance.

Intel Core i5-10400 vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (techspot.com)

If you go z490, you at least have the option of getting a 11th gen k CPU in the future to OC, but if that's not your plan, it's hard to recommend intel here.

I think I'll get a z490 together with a better ram and upgrade to a K cpu later someday. Which budget z490 is a decent option?

Yeah so budget and Z490 do not go together so well, that said I would likely choose: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS ATX Gaming Motherboard (10th Gen Intel Core, LGA 1200 Socket, DDR4, CF, Dual M.2 Slots, USB 3.2 Gen 2, 2.5G LAN, DP/HDMI, Mystic Light RGB)

It has what's important to me, 2 x m2 slots, usb-c front connecter, enough usb, 6x Sata ports (at least 4 are 90deg), good enough VRM's and looks good.

I've not found another board below this ~$160 price point that's appealing, but my needs are likely different to yours.

what about Asus Z490-P or Asus PRIME Z490M-PLUS ? I could easily get the one you've mentioned but its out of stock here

If I had to choose between those two, it would be the Z490-P.
Is the Asus tuf z490 or Gigabyte z490 Aorus Elite out of reach? They usually get discounted to ~$160 range.

I'd only recommend spending more on these if you are going to get a K chip and throw an OC on it.

If you just want the ability to run faster ram, then you can probably get a cheaper board and not care too much about the VRM and PCB thickness.

Yes they're in stock but Asus tuf is 187 and the gigabyte is 197 euros. I'm literally lost in these boards lol

I would suggest saving yourself some money by getting a b460 board and 2666mhz ram since the i5-10400 is limited to that anyway, by the time you upgrade to a k version it wont make sense because youd be better off getting something on a newer platform. So in my opinion, go b460 or go z490 with a k version or go amd where you dont have to worry about speeds being locked down.

SPEC LIST:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X w/ NZXT Kraken Z73 360mm Liquid Cooler
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) 5000MHz CL18
  • Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Godlike
  • SSD: Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 1TB (x3)
  • PSU: Corsair AX1600i
  • Case: NZXT H710
  • Monitor: Alienware AW2521H 25inch 360Hz 1ms

I don't want to switch from intel to amd not because of fanboying, idk i just prefer intel, did AMD cpu's really improved in the past? What build would you recommend with ryzen?

A Ryzen 3600 and B450 board would usually have been a better value option than intel at this price point, but at least here, 3600's have gotten really expensive due to the various shortages, but the 10400f is pretty keenly priced and available.

It just puts you in the awkward situation with the motherboard. If you go B460, you sorta limit yourself for future upgrades. If you go Z490 your spending a lot more cash up front, for a mild performance increase from the ram, and the possibility that you might upgrade later to a K series part.

You need to weigh those odds. Personally, I'd probably just go with the cheapest board that will run the chip to maximise the value proposition now, unless your specifically planning to upgrade to something faster before the platform is replaced.

Yes, Ryzen 5000 is better than Intel 10th gen in every way including price and Ryzen 3000 is very good as well.  Ryzen also lets you overclock the cpu and run any ram speed no matter what cpu or motherboard you get, unlike intel.

If you can increase your budget by 50 euros I think you could get a b550 motherboard (~100euro) and 16gb of 3200mhz ram (~60euro) with a Ryzen 5600X (~340euro). Or you could go with a Ryzen 3600, or maybe a Ryzen 3100 as a temporary cpu with plans to upgrade to Ryzen 5000 later on.

Well, 5600x is 400€ here so lets forget about this option

Thats too bad. You could go for 3600 or a placeholder 3100 or wait for 4 core Ryzen 5000 or wait for  the 5600X price to normalize, up to you
