I would personally get the 10700k in 2020 (soon to be 2021) because although a 6/12 is fine for gaming, there's some instances already where the extra cores help in gaming and also will help you do other tasks besides gaming.

Sorry to be that guy, but - if you can afford to wait a few months for prices to be sensible, you should consider choosing an AMD processor instead. Price-performance wise they are extremely competitive even in the high end now, often winning out over Intel.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

This too; but right now Intel is just the cheaper option.

Even at msrp (good luck), a 5800x is $450 and you can readily get a 10-core Intel chip for $50 less. It's a little slower in benchmarks,, but with fast RAM it will beat Zen 3 at gaming.

Strictly gaming!

The Ryzen 5 5600x is a better gaming chip... If you can find one for MSRP. You also won't have to buy a Z board and an aftermarket cooler to overclock it.
