cpu boosting in idle

Jappo

Hey everybody!

I just built my new PC, and I'm having a weird occurance with my cpu.

The cpu is a 5950x, so base clock as 3.4GHz and boost at 4.9GHz.

Even when the PC is in idle,

literally only the task manager open,

utilisation at 1 maybe 2%.

and still the cpu sits at 4.2GHz to 4.5GHz.

and even just starting something as simple as steam to download something in the background immediately shoots the clock to 4.9GHz.

Which also instantly affects my temps.

I feel like that's not the way it should be.

or is that just me?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds normal to me

Sounds absolutely like how a stock ryzen should behave

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Can you please explain?

why would it not sit at base clock when doing absolutely nothing?

I'm still really weirded out at this.

why would there be a base clock, when it never goes to the base clock?

base clock is for when all cores are loaded, you'll see you cpu running at or near base clock when you run intensive applications such as AAA games or cinebench

your cpu will boost above base clock when performing single threaded workload to speed it up, performing it faster for snappier user experience

also task manager is unreliable for reading clock speed, ryzen master is better i think

Hello I too was facing the same Issue. The reason could be because the power plan in Window has been selected as High performance Mode. Try changing it to Balanced or Power saving mode and see if the Clock speed come back to normal. Hope this helps
