So my friend wants to get a rx 5500 xt. He has some i5 3000 series which is a little bit problematic, but he says he will replace the cpu in time as well. I was just thinking, isn't rx 5500xt getting outdated? He currently has an 1050 ti, isn't it better if he waits for the 3050 ti or something like that?

Depending on the game, a Sandy Bridge i5 may not be problematic at all.

The 5500xt isn't outdated because nothing has come along to replace it, especially if you get a good deal on it. At some point, if rumors are to be believed, there will be an RTX 3050, but that could take another 6 months.

it isn't outdated yet, but by the time he gets a new cpu there will probably be a rtx 3050 ti and the rx 5500 xt will become outdated before he can get a cpu that actually uses it...he wants to play the newest games, that's the problem

You can play the newest games on a lot of old hardware if you're willing to compromise and tinker. I haven't found a game yet that my i3 4160 and GTX 960 can't run at 1080p 30fps yet, although sometimes that means running it at 900p and using sharpening, and messing with INI files.

well he wants 1080p 60 fps high-ultra, and his 8GB RAM doesn't help a lot either

idk if the RAM is that much of a bottleneck.

Show him this video - how medium is indistinguishable from high/ultra. It's not 2006.

Yeah, this is so true, but this would suggest that he shouldn't even upgrade from his 1050 ti, and it would be very hard to convince him of that :/

Well, yeah, he shouldn't haha. Just look at the graphics comparisons between Low and Ultra on Cyberpunk 2077. A 1050 ti running on low performs the same as a 2070 running on ultra 1080p, and looks almost identical. He should hang on a while. Maybe upgrade his CPU now and his GPU later when the 3050* is out.

Yeah for the CPU I'm very curious what the new ryzen 3 will look like, sounds really interesting considering what the other 5000 series perform like. Since he's gotta change his motherboard anyway, why not switch to AMD(of course, if the ryzen 3 lives up to my expectations)
