When I booted up my PC today, the GPU is running at constant boost speed. It's not running at the game clock, which usually reaches 2 ghz for my card, but all I have open is firefox and it is reaching almost 1800 mhz.. I don't know why this is happening because I haven't changed any settings and I used to get about 300 mhz while doing web browsing and idle tasks. You likely have set the energy option in the driver to "prefer high performance". If you do that, the GPU will always "stay ready" at the boost clock. My 3080 does the same. But i haven't seen any higher power consumption compared to when it downclocks at idle.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Thanks for the response! Looking at task manager, could it be Nvidia broadcast? I read somewhere that Nvidia broadcast sometimes forces the GPU to run at full speed. Is it bad for the GPU to be running at full clock for extended periods of time, or is it ok as long as the temperatures are normal?

also, my energy settings are set to "'optimal" in the drivers

It's not bad for your GPU. Like i said you can even turn a dial in the driver settings to let the GPU stay at boost all the time, like i did. It does not impact the lifespan of the GPU.

A RTX Broadcast lets your GPU stay at boost either way you might aswell set it to "prefer maximum performance".

You might want to only launch Broadcast when you use it. 

On my 2080S having it open in the background causes about 30W extra power draw becasue of always being on boost clocks for nothing at all when not using it.

It definitely draws more power if it's in a higher power state, but if that doesn't bother you then it's fine, I suppose

 

What display refresh rate are you running on? I notice that it would clock higher on certain refresh rates, if you have multiple displays

I'm only running one monitor, at 165hz, so I don't think that's the cause. Thanks for the input, the extra power draw doesn't really bother me, especially because I am actively using nvidia broadcast all day anyway, so it's not for nothing.

Uhm, try switching the monitor to 144hz, that solved it for me, for some bizarre reason
