hi

i have a server with 6 1tb HDD and a 256gb NVMe as cache but unfortuantely the server do not have a RAID card capable of doing RAID 5 with caching, i have windows server 2019 installed on it and i am here to ask if there is a way to create a "windows raid 5" with cache

thank you

Windows has Storage Spaces, you can find it in the Control Panel.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

There's Windows Storage Spaces and at least according to what I've been told @Electronics Wizardythe parody performance has been improved. In the past it was abysmal. I do believe it supports a caching feature but I've not tried using it myself.

Do you have 10Gig+ networking? It's going to be a real waste of an NVMe drive if you don't.

Storage spaces is probably going to be the best way to go (at least to experiment). I doubt the cache drive will make any difference for you, though.

thank you so much guys, I unfortunately do not have a 10 gigabit network, only a 2.5 one, I know that an nvme drive is absolutely useless in my case, but I will buy an ssd soon and replace the nvme

I have mounted the it only for testing purposes😁

what are you using it for?

sdd might help for write cache in storage spaces as parity performance sucks. But your gonna be pretty network limited here likely.

i'm not going to use it for important data, only some software and some iso's, i am going to use the ssd as cache

i know that i am network limited but a 10 gigabit network is too expensive for the kind of data i'm going to store in it

since you got the hardware why not try setting it up your self?

Id really just seutp something like proxmox on the host with zfs, and then put windows server in the vm.
