1. for a regular hdd like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive - what are the common names of the connectors for these drives? are there any easy ways we can tell? for example the name of the connector is labeled on the drive itself would be best

2. when a computer has a hdd with an os running, can you connect a 2nd hdd externally to that computer?  2nd hdd is also a regular hdd. if you can, then can you accessed data in the 2nd hdd that way? if so how? what do you need?

know of any good sites that shows either of these info well?

1. for more recent drives made in the last decade or so, all you really need is a SATA cable and a power cable.

2. Yes. you can access the external drives information through file explorer.

if you're running an external usb hdd, yes and yes (through file explorer). If you mean like connect it with sata or IDE than i don't recommend doing it while the pc is on

as Letgomyleghoe said, all you need is USB if you mean those external drives meant for like laptop users. it may also need a power cable too. (do note, maybe)

I mean unless you are like goin real jank and getting something really old then it may be different but everything made in this decade or so, should use SATA.

if it doesn't (for some reason) i would imagine the cable needed would be shipped with the drive.

those external drives for laptop users use USB or USB-C or ESATA, ESATA is tricky because some supply power and some don't (the original spec does not)

ok here is the full step by step guide for using a external drive:

1. buy one

2. set it up (power if needed)

3. plug it in via USB into your device (location or port doesn't matter)

4. access and modify its contents through file explorer built into windows or whatever os you are running

you literally asked about an external drive, if you mean that you want to connect a normal drive externally you need an enclosure.

To connect a normal hard drive to a computer through usb, you need an enclosure or adapter. One like this would work. You put the drive inside and then connect it to power and a USB port. To access the data, you would use it like a usb drive (unless you set it up to behave like a system drive).

I will attempt to answer this with one post.

1. Really, really old HDDs used proprietary connectors, but those were before Windows 95. Windows 95 and up (for the general consumer) used one of three types:
IDE
SCSI (which has many different types but I don't know them all and am not going to go into them here, I've only seen 50-pin SCSI HDDs)
SATA

And sometimes SAS/U.2.

2. Except with really small external drives, external hard drives are almost always regular HDDs in special cases with adapters. I've taken apart 2 external HDDs (3TB, 1TB, both WD) and they both had regular HDDs with adapter boards. Both are running in my tower right now. The ways to access these drives:
FireWire (has two different types, 400 and 800, they are not compatible with each other without an adapter/cable)

USB (any of the different types)

eSATA (either eSATA which is just SATA, or eSATAp which had eSATA and power).
